If you want to go down the cashback route you can probably get a pay monthly contract and end up paying nothing (you pay the line rental and then claim it back).

If you go direct to the networks, you are looking at around the £20 mark for the cheapest contracts nowadays.

If you aren't too bothered about getting a new phone, look at some of the SIM only deals offered by the networks.

Virgin have 300 free texts and 300 free minutes for £15 at the moment.

But there are much better deals on PAYG than that. Personally I'd avoid it.

If you don't mind taking a fully-guaranteed Refurbished Handset you can get some great deals on most of the networks. One of the best is;

The Nokia N70r on 3.

Before I get shot down, I'd challenge you to find anyone who's had a bad experience of 3 when using the N70 - it's a great phone. Also the deal is phenomenal;

(WITH NO CASHBACK MALARKEY, BY THE WAY)

£15 per month for;

300 minutes
1000 texts (both doubled to 600 & 2000 for the 1st 6 months)
50 Minutes Video Calling
50 MMS
£5 Credit for Games, Ringtones, Videos, Music, etc.
Unlimited MSN Messenger
30Mb FULL internet browsing

But don't listen to me, I would suggest if you're interested to take the 14 day trial and see for yourself how good the network is when paired up with a decent handset such as the N70.

(Also available on the same deal is the Nokia 6280r but I'd recommend the N70 over it anyday.)

That is a good deal.

My sister is on PAYG with 3 at the moment and the nework doesn't seem as bad as people make out, not round where I live anyway. Customer service is another matter though - but how often do you have to call them anyway.
