Can anyone recommend a good piece of software to creat MP4 files for playing on a portable MP4 player from MPEG-" and DVD files?

Try searching for iriverter (its a Sourceforge project) and see if that has the options for your player. It supports the Creative ZVM and a select few others, and may be configurable to the specs of your player.

This is a great programme. Simple to use, choose the quality or even the size of the file you want it to create. Makes Xvid or DivX versions. Will convert even Vob files.

The quality is amazing too, and it's free.
