W800i "Invalid SIM"

I wonder if anyone can help shed some light on this mystery? I have pasted below a conversation between me and my friend about the problem. It would seem his phone is "back listed" on all networks but no one will tell him why? How can you go about finding why your phone was barred if they refuse to tell you?
The phone miraculously stopped working after 3 months and then displayed "Invalid SIM"

Max says:
as you know its a Sony Ericsonn W800i
Max says:
the number of the 02 simcard i originally used with it is #########
Max says:
one day i noticed I couldnt send a text
Max says:
so i restarted the phone
Max says:
once restarted the screen displayes 'Invalid SIM'
Max says:
I tried the 02 sim in another 2 phones, and it worked perfectly
Max says:
no, i took the sims that worked in those phones and put them in the W800i and guess what?
Max says:
the didnt work
Max says:
invalid sim appears
Max says:
This means my phone is useless as it's the handset that is blocked and not the sim
Max says:
it cost me £220
Max says:
Carphone warehouse simply said that the phone was blaklisted, giving me no reason, and told me it was 02's problem
Max says:
as u know i bought my phone from
Max says:
Carphone warehouse
Max says:
so i ring O2
Max says:
they simply tell me the phone is bloked against a sim
Max says:
and wont tell me the number of the sim its blocked against
Max says:
so?
Max says:
i decide, hmmm if the phone is bloked against a sim
Max says:
then which off my sims are bloked, then i can ring up and get them to unblok it ad the phone
Max says:
no problem!! no sims that i know are bloked
Max says:
so result?
Max says:
a dead blaklisted for no reason phone
Max says:
that cost me £220

Any ideas on how we could go abut resolving this?

afaik only the owner can request the phone to be blocked when stolen/lost (the network provider would also block in cases of non payment of contract)
was it a contract phone or payg?
its not unknown for phones to be blocked by mistake when they are blocking another one and get one digit wrong
was he the original owner? or was it brought used?

It was brought new from Carphone Warehouse on PAYG and he never asked it to be blocked...

Could it be a mistake then? hmmm sounds likely

It's either been blocked by mistake or the Carphone Warehouse has sold him a stolen phone, which HAS happened before.

The phone will not be blacklisted against a particular sim, but blacklisted for use on all uk mobile networks.

Phone o2, give them the IMEI number.

You will need to give them your mobile numbers so they can perform security checks. Ask them if the sim which barred the phone is one of your MPN's you have just given them.

They have all the information about which sim barred the IMEI.

Though if you (mate) bought the phone new and have never had the sim barred i cannot see why this would happen. Unless someone has duplicated your IMEI number.
