Am thinking of beefing up security with a wireless camera which works at 2.4ghz. Are these things truly 'closed circuit' or could somone with similar system or even a standard TV tuner pick up the signal being transmitted from the camera?

If it's one of those X10 ones (the ones you see all the popups for) then there was something on C|Net News.com a few months ago... apparently they found out the local office superstore had them up to check up on employees at the till... and C|Net went and managed to look at the streams with a simple tuner from quite a distance away...

Most of these type are switchable to one of 4 different channels. I have 3 different types and can pick each up on all receivers, one of the receivers is a standard video sender receiver.

You're best to use an IP camera, ie one which plugs into a network. That way you can use 802.11b (wireless) and run it encrypted so it would be a hell of a lot more difficult to breach.
You run the CCTV system from a PC (as its a network it doesnt have to be a designated PC) with some software they provide, which has things such as motion sensor so it only records when something moves!

try www.axis.com for just about the best IP cams available

Wireless cameras will be apply to be picked up using a simple AV tuner. I bought one from www.flyonthewall.uk.com that has a range of 400m which is great unless someone else within range has a tuner! Very unlikey though ...
