Is it common for iPods to freeze up for absolutely no reason?

I've had mine (30gb video) for a couple of weeks - it's not been dropped or even put in a bag or a pocket and I don't remove it from my computer until it's finished updating, but it's just frozen and locked up. By this I mean the screen froze, it wouldn't charge and my computer did not recognise it when I connected it to the USB port.

I managed to reset it after following Apple's instructions, but I still don't know why it locked up! Anyone have any suggestions so I can avoid it happening again (if I can avoid it happening again!). Is this 'normal' behaviour from an iPod?

Thanks in advance.

When you do remove it, I presume you are doing a 'safe' remove?

(ie. tell the computer to disconnet the USB device and only unplugging it once the computer flashes up the message telling you it's now safe to disconnect)

If you just pull it out, that will often cause lock ups .... and quite possibly create bad sectors on the hard drive of the portable unit.

God, yeah. Don't worry I'm not a Computer Illiterate Moron!

I've followed all instructions to the word. It's been in an Agent 18 case since I took it out the box and hasn't really moved from my desk. It's definitely not trauma and it's not caused by removing it from my computer 'unsafely'. Which is why I asked here!

Well, you gotta ask the obvious first! You'd be amazed how many people don't use safe remove! (and then wonder why things start going wrong .... )

Anyway .... if you're using safe remove, I've no idea I'm afraid .... it certainly isn't normal for it to freeze all the time.

You tried upading to latest firmware?

This has happened to me a couple of times, the first time was because Windows XP had decided to switch it's firewall on again after an update and with windows firewall on it tends not to recognise any external devices plugged in.
The second time it did it for no reason but it hasnt done it since

Sorry if I sound a bit aggressive.

I've saved up for God only knows how long for this iPod and I've been treating it like it's made of glass since I've got it. I'm just so bloody annoyed that's this is happening.

I have a 60GB iPod video and yes mine has frozen sometimes, not often, and I make sure I disconnect it properly. But it seems to freeze at random points, but it has only happened two or three times. The reset (hold menu and center button) does the trick and it works fine again.

Is this happening *every* time you disconnect it from your PC?

If it was only a one off .... I wouldn't worry about it. If it starts happening every time, thats when you start to worry .....

I don't know if this makes you feel any better, but my 30GB 5G iPod locks up almost daily. Like yourself, I've treated it very well, and have done everything to the book, but often find I have to reset it when turning it on on a morning.

This happened with my IPOD also, I had it for about 2 weeks and all of a sudden it started freezing and then the next time it would work the battery would be gone, this went on for about 6 months and I tried re-setting it but nothing worked. Then all of a sudden it stopped freezing and now its over a year since it happened last and its been working fine. Weird!

Sounds just like what's happening here. I noticed after resetting it and recharging it, the battery ran down in 2 hours!

I've charged it again and so far the battery's lasted about 8 hours but is well over 3/4 of the way down (back light is off etc. so should be lasting longer).

My ipod nano has started not responding to me pressing the dial. When I lock and unlock, it respondes to than ant that apple holgram thing appears. I suspect that I may have got it damp and am hoping that it will dry out and come back to life. I am on holiday and so not near my home computer.
