I have just won a JVC XV-M557GD DVD player but the digital output on the back is optical and my Philips TV has only a coaxial input.

Is there any way of converting this either through a box or modifications of the DVD? I have seen on JVC's web site that the cheaper machine have both connections, so is the circuitry already inside?

Okay ,
Firstly , you should connect the dvd to your tv using a rgb scart cable , ixos make the best ones but they`re a tad expensive , select rgb output from your dvd`s menu setup page .
The optical and coaxial outputs on the back of dvd players are for outputting sound and not picture .
If you decide to invest in a dolby digital or dts suround sound system the best way of connecting to the amplifier would be with either of these interconnections , there are loads of arguments about which one of the two is the best but , take it from me , optical is far superior .
Hope this helps , happy viewing .
Oh , by the way............you lucky bugger , the jvc is a nice machine , congrats on your good fortune .
