Number Porting Nightmare Grrr

In theory porting your number shouldn't be a big task but I've only done it twice and on both times it has been a disaster, the latest cock up is between Orange and O2.

My number was due to be ported from Orange to O2 on Wednesday but as yet its still not active, My Orange sim card is still switched on as is the O2 simcard, Problem being the O2 card with my new number is active but if you phone it its just a dead tone, I also can not receive messages, It beats me why the Orange sim card is still switched on and getting full reception, but if you go to make a call you can't.

I have been on to O2 who don't seem to know what the problem is and keep telling me to phone Orange, Orange tell me to phone O2, I have phoned constantly since Wednesday and am no further forward. Any advice appreciated

Orange have not released the number properly.

Phone o2, the advisor needs to speak with the MNP dept.

MNP will sort this out with Orange.

Isn't there a gaurantee with porting numbers?

I remember reading some guidelines ages back when I moved from Three to O2 2 years back.

I just ported a number from an O2 PAYG card to my contract card as it was a very good number (similar ones are selling on Ebay as 'gold' numbers for around £50-100, so a good freebie).

I know you went from Orange to O2 here, but for anyone else reading, if you go from O2 to O2 they can port the number in 48 hours instead of 7 days.

When I spoke to the support team for O2 online they were unaware of this method and quote me 7 days. I then spoke to the support team for PAYG and they asked for my serial number for the contract sim and then for the PAYG sim. He then asked for my billing details etc. and said "right, that's done. Wait 48 hours and you'll be transfered".

He was right too, 2 days later my new number was active.

So if you are doing this method of transfering numbers, speak to the PAYG team about it. They can do it all from where they are so you don't need the contract support team at all.

Ha! When I ported within O2 (both O2 online contracts) it took over 2 months! Muppets. I assume it was one of those "one off" "lost in the post" type happenings because I've never had a problem before or since.

You are NOT allowed to thats why it will have took so long. It wouldn't have been a port either as you have to go to a different network for it to be a port .

Though why did you cancel an online contract and then take another out, why not just upgrade on the orginal and save any hassle?

Yeah it does sound weird taking a number from one contract to another. They allow PAYG to contract as in my case, but I wasn't aware they allow contract to contract. This is mainly to stop you getting new offers and using the upgrade route instead.
