Replacing iPod Hard Drive
Has anyone here done it?
I've been looking through online tutorials it it doesn't look too difficult, in fact the hardest part seems to be the opening of the case! My iPod's hard drive is showing signs of packing up, and I'm not keen on paying around £150 for it to be done, when I can get a drive for about half that and do it myself. |

The HDD just failed in my 4th Gen iPod, i were looking at around £60 for a new drive, i just didn't think it were worth it when i could upgrade to a Video for about £130 extra, and sell the old iPod as parts for about £40/50.
Out of interest, what signs is your failing hard drive showing? |

Oh, forgot to add, it is easy to change the drive, once you pop the back off (hardest part!) the HDD just unplugs.

Every now and again (it's getting more regular now) the sad iPod icon shows, or the folder one.
I've just opened the case and it looks pretty easy to replace. I can't afford to buy a new iPod, so it looks like this is the way forward. Last edited by leeroybrownfors : 13-08-2006 at 22:36. |

Ah right, mine just died all of a sudden (ironically when i were demonstrating how to use iTunes/iPod to a relative!). Just crashed mid-update.
Yet, i still didn't get any icons on the iPod, just kept locking up, i could hear the HDD clicking. Eventually i got the sad iPod icon on screen. Once you're inside it's easy, as i'm sure you can see! The drive in mine were a 20gb Toshiba, it's annoying because it were less than 2yrs old, and had been so well looked after, there were barely a scratch on it! Let me know how you get on. Be careful with the headphone/hold switch cable! |

Thanks for that.
I'm going to order a drive soon and fit it as soon as possible. I've noticed the top cable and was careful when opening/closing. |
