What a daft question.

It's also a question that's not likely to get an answer either (far more likely to start a long and tedious argument) as it all depends on what features you consider to be 'good'. Both companies do a range of players, which all have good and bad points.

Anyway ..... neither of them do. My Cowon is better than anything either of them produce!

(Just to add my own stupid answer to an already stupid thread ....... although my answer is still correct ..... of course)

Come on - a Sony Walkman blows them all away.

On the origional question I'd say all the sound quality/build quality are both the same, but the iPod is well ahead with the software (iTunes) and ease of using the actual device.

I'd go for Apple any day.

Creative! Apple may be fashionable but Creative products are far better.

Best is purely a subjective term. Based on sales you could say Apple and indeed the reviews and general opinion of iPods would tend to back that up. However, some people like other players and find they suit their needs just fine. Some people like the combined solution of iPod and iTunes and that they're in essence one product sharing the same designs and product ethos. On the other hand, some people like other players that may not have one integrated solution but which maybe allow them that little bit of flexibility in some other area that may suit they're requirements better.

The best bet is to take a look at the players to see which hardware you like and to install the appropriate software to check it out before you buy.

I love my Creative Zen 20GB plus it is like £100 cheaper than an iPod. That's where the rip off is with Apple their prices compared to other companies for the same amount of disk space. Plus of course so many people believe that the sun shines out of Apple's a*** with iPods, and that they are the best full stop. plus it seems that iPods are staple must haves for Chavs

ok trying not to get into the PC bit here sticking purely to technical specs

Apple are thinner and smaller often easier to sync with PCs (itunes of course) but thats where it ends for apple being better

If we DONT take fashion or looks into account

creative video plays Xvids and divxs

have better battery life
have a bigger harddrive for less cost (not on all models but for most cases this holds true)

has a much much much better Sound to Noise ratio (quality of music) (Cant stress this enough as a reason why creative win out technically)

offer FM radio
and Dictaphone /FM radio recording
play WMA files as well

However most people just stop at the line AAAAAAAAAAWWWW it looks cute and ooo its an Ipod and dont care about the rest of it.

precisely. Most who, not all (before I get flamed), who buy are iPods are sheep. They buy it because it's fashionable or because their mates have one, so therefore I must have one too. Why not break the mould and be different?
But forgot teens have to be the same, must all wear the same brand of clothes, have the same shoes/trainers. Must all listen to c*** and must of course all have iPods even buying 2 or 3 different ones. Muppets.

Go for whichever works for you. On my computer i use iTunes for my music, because it just works how i expect it to, whereas media player doesnt. Then when i got a new mp3 player(did have a creative muvo thingy before), i got an iPod, because it works seamlessly with iTunes, works well+easy to use, large clear screen, looks good and has plenty of accessories.

But, my creative player was better in terms of battery life(flash based, so should be expected really), use Windows explorer to put music on(no WMP rubbish), great to use as a usb flash drive too.

So realy, just get the player+software combination that does what you want to get out of it.

I personally would have to go with Creative... not only did they come up with the software apple's is based on, they also create far better quality products that are usually a bit cheaper!

Plus their tech support is 2nd to none!

Creative everytime

I know the current style is to bash iPods, but...

I've been told that I'm a sheep for having an iPod. Why do I have an iPod? Because I wanted a jukebox and every-f***ing-body but Apple don't cater for Mac users. So I had to have an iPod. I *really* wish people would remember this when berating me for not considering other players.

Also - the comment about all teens having to be the same and wear the same clothes. I object to that - some of us *do* have brains of our own.

As far as I'm aware, they are quite a few jukebox's which you can transfer music to them direct through the file system. Certainly the minsitry of sound jukebox I used to have could.

Are you saying that OS X can't copy files to a USB device through it's file system?

Yep, if the OP wants to know who makes the "best" portable media players I'd have to say Cowon as well. Obviously it depends on what you really want from a player, but the Cowon iAudio players have pretty much everything.

As for Creative vs. Apple, I believe the Creative Zen players have the edge over the Apple iPod. The Zen's up/down scroller is a bit annoying compared to the iPod's wheel, but in terms of media format support, build quality and battery life, the Zen definitely comes out top. The bundled software is crap in both cases, though I prefer the Zen's "what do you want to do?" approach over the iPod's "I did it without asking you, and I'll kick and scream if you try to do things your way" approach.

The Zen gives you a wider selection of legal download services too, whereas with the iPod it's either iTunes or iTunes. If legal downloads are on your agenda, you might want to keep your options open with a Zen rather than commit to iTunes with an iPod.

Right - should have mentioned what I was defining as a jukebox. Something which comes with automated software to synch your music library to it. It hadn't ocurred to me that some jukeboxes do use USB Mass Storage for transfer. Did your Ministry of Sound one do all the funky metadata organizing once the music was on there, or did you have to organize it manually?

It generally worked with the metadata, although if it was having an off day it didn't work.....that's why I got rid of it in the end. I think the creative players will work as a USB Mass Storage device too, but don't quote me on that as I don't have one!

Apple if you want to follow the crowd, if you have money to through away then having what everyone else has is simpler. Then you can used itunes and pay a ridiculous 79p per song, be like everyone else - conned.

But if you want a sturdier mp3 with more memory and better features for less money then creative.

Depends what you consider more important.

I have the Createive Zen Vision: M. I love it.

I also have an old 3rd gen iPod 40Gb, which I have plugged into my home stereo.

My problem is that my mp3 collection has now exceeded 30 gigs, so my Zen Vision M's capacity has been exceeded.

I now realise that random synchroization is the way to go, but a random synch on a 30 gig machine would take too long, so I've decided to get something smaller.

I was thinking about the new Creative Zen Vison Plus, but it's not out here yet. Maybe one of the new iPod shuffles would do the trick, but no radio and no display is a bit of a downside.

Frankly, right now I like the 2 gig solid state Oomi. High quality sound in a tiny, stylish player with a radio and a display. I can random it synch from Media Monkey once and week and my problem is solved.

I have never owned a Creative but I have owned an iPod. I am replacing my iPod Mini in green and i would like to consider a Creative as i like the look of those also and they seem to be quite nifty. However, i don't own a PC i own a Mac and i am not sure how Creative would work with a Mac so i will have to look into that. The Apple iPods are naturally very intuitive with their computer systems.
