Unlocking DVD's
Moe's tavern
16-08-2006
I have a Sony DVD recorder, and was recently given a few boxsets, sadly they are all region 1. I've read elsewhere in here that a code using a One for All remote unlocks them. Has anyone else tried this method with any success?

You can also do it with a remote from www.dvdchips.co.uk

Hi,

You could always go to ebuyer.com or similar and buy a cheap Chinese DVD player for £30 or so. Most of these will play any region, but check the spec and user reviews on the site first.

i was thinking of that, but unfortunately my living room is already resembling the window display of Dixons - sorry, i mean Currys Digital (!). I think another silver box to plug in will send my girlfriend over the edge, which she's far too close to as it is...

It seems silly. I paid quite a bit for the machine as it is, and even though you can by cheap region-free players now, it's still region 2 locked. Grrrrr.

Here's what you're after:

prepare:
1. select dvd device on remote
2. hold magic button until rabbit comes out
3. enter device code 0533

program buttons 1..5 with the following codes:
1 - 189 or 00189
2 - 255 or 00255
3 - 095 or 00095
4 - 221 or 00221
5 - 079 or 00079

1. hold magic button until rabbit comes out
2. press 994
3. press magic
4. enter 3digit code from above
5. press button (1..5) where to program it
6. repeat steps 1 to 5 for all keys.

have it a go:
1. remove disk, put player on standby
2. press 1,2,3,4,5 - success is displayed and plyer starts up
3. press 1,2,3,4,5 - player shuts down and BINGO!

"Magic" button is the setup button

"Rabbit" is the led light on the OFA remote

ok, bought the remote and entered these hacks. No Joy.

I;ve got close, once i think. I entered all the numbers and have managed to turn my machine off - twice. However, both times have been before i've been able to input the last '5' digit. So wehn i input 1,2,3,4,5 nothing happens.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please post the model no of the OFA remote (the URC no) and I'll try and help.

The instructions are for the older OFA remotes and you may need to modify the codes. The first code (0533) - brand code, is obviously 4 digits, but are the codes in the supplied manual 4 digits?
The same goes for the codes you program on buttons 1 - 5.

I remember doing mine a while back with one of the newer remotes and had to modify the codes.

Plus, the other codes listed for Sony are all four digits: 0533, 0573,1903, 1904 if that's any help.

I think you've only gone and got a remote that doesn't have the necessary feature to program the individual buttons - known as "Key Magic"

Instead,

Get this from argos - £19.99.

This should work perfectly - exactly as per my earlier instructions. It uses the 4 digit code (0533) for the main code. Then use the 3 digit codes for buttons 1-5.

Important:

After setting the remote with 0533, you need to make sure it actually opperates the dvd. If it doesn't, you need to change the remote command mode from '3' to '1', as per your Sony instruction manual. This is done via the onscreen menu. Do this before executing the hack.

Once you've completed the hack, you can change the command mode back to '3', if you so desire.

thanks for that, the only thing is the remote has indeed got a magic key - it even has the word 'magic' written on it!
It's also possible to turn the dvd on and off by the remote, which i presume means that all its other functions would work by the remote too.
it's this one here

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...2Bcontrols.htm

with the 'magic' key being the black one in the top left corner of the device...

(sorry the link is a bit messy, i don't even know how to make that more presentable...some people just shouldn't be allowed near technology...

"Key Magic" is a unique feature and has nothing to do with having/not having a "Magic" button. The feature enables you to program specific command codes on individual buttons. These commands can be unusual ones that aren't even replicated on the original manufacturer's remote.

Please see page 17 of instruction manual.

I can't see this mentioned in your remote's manual.

well it's back to argos for me it seems

i bought this model as it was listed in a general hack for sony dvd's on the DVD Reviewer hack page. Which i though might possibly work. Sadly not.

The 'magic' button appeared to work, as i think i've mentioned before, inputting the numbers caused the machine to go into standby mode at one point - sadly i had one more number to input before it was supposed to. Most annoying.

Do you have the same make machine as me? I'm not buggering the the machine up by trying (and failing) all these codes am i?

thanks again for all your help.

Get yourself down to Argos right away.

Yes, it deffo works.

Have used the hack countless times over the last 4 years on two different Sony players, and four different Sony recorders. The latest being, RDR-HXD710 and RDR-HXD910.
