Please, please can someone help me and suggest what is wrong with my phone. I have for the past hour trawled through the Nokia help pages, help forums, and even phoned Nokia until I found out that they charge 75p a minute for their advice line.

The phone is two years old. It had a 32mb MMR card in it, and I want to put lots of MP3s on to use as a music player too. I bought one from a reputable dealer on eBay, 512MB, compatible with my phone. It would only register 80mb. I went to several mobile phone shops and they all said it should work. It was a small sized one, with an adapter. Anyway, long story short, the sellers have offered me a full refund, and it's on its way back in the post now.

I went to town today, and took the advice of two different people, one in the mobile shop, and another one who is an independent repair/upgrade place. I bought another proper, recommended card from a mobile phone shop for £30, 512 MB. The guy in the upgrade place even has exactly the same phone as me. I came home, had to unseal the pack with scissors, it's that welded plastic sort, put it in my phone, and it will only register 79MB. For the love of god, please someone tell me what can be wrong with this phone? I am on the verge of tears, I can't afford to throw away another £30, I really thought I'd done the right thing, but the shop can't take it back after the packet is cut open.

Any suggestions please, anything I can try?

I know it's strange Ryan, everyone says it's strange, nobody had ever heard of the fault that the bluetooth or cable device wouldn't transfer stuff to the phone either. Everyone has never heard of this fault either, the card should work. I just need to know why. I can't rant on at the friend I bought this from, but I dearly wish I'd never set eyes on the bloody thing, it's driven me close to the edge this week!

Two faulty cards would be too much of a coincidence, flicker. The only suggestion I could give is for you to remove the memory card from the phone and wipe the contacts on the phone with a dry cloth or some glasses cleaner material, and then re-connect the card. If this fails it looks as though you have a faulty phone.

Hi I've had to do that a few times now for various people, its:
V 03 17
30 04 04
RH-12
GSM P1.1
(c)NMP

Hope that means something to you. I was told that for the original card I had, that I've now sent back that I need to have V 5 for it, and that it would be a free upgrade. However, I then found out that it meant that everything would be wiped from my phone, and it would cost around £30 to do, could be more, so I decided against that. Looks like that may have been my best option then, but I didn't want everything wiped from the phone, or to spend another £30 at the time.

I don't suppose the card's voltage might have anything to do with this?

Not all phones have this, but is there an option to backup your data to the memory card?

You could do that, then send the phone for an upgrade, then restore your data from the card (assuming it still works).

Alternatively, can you connect your phone to a PC, and back up data to that?

you need to update the software on the phone as im on v4.44 and mine will not take a 512 mb card, but my partner is on v5.12 i think and hers does

the only way you can do it is in a nokia shop or cpw, some market stores do it too but may not have the up2date software

i think it costs about £10.00

unless the phone is under 18mths old i think

hope is helps

Hi thanks, the nearest Nokia shop is Swansea - about 40 miles away, I've already looked. The other shop I went in who can do it said £30.

However, I have some very good news. I feel very, very elated right now. I have downloaded two cdsonto the card, using a card reader into the usb on my laptop, just to see what happens. I then just went into my Music Player on the phone and they are all on there, clicked Options/Memory Status, and it's now giving a reading of 345MB free on Memory Card! Hoo-bloody-ray. It must have been a glitch, whereby it wasn't giving the correct reading. So two albums hasn't even taken one third of the memory. To say I am relieved and chuffed would be an understatement. Thanks everyone who replied though, but it seems like its sorted
