With the Brits dropping the Best Urban category, does this mean this awful genre is on it's way out?

Does that mean no more listening to kids on the bus blasting out crappy r'n'b through their mono mobile phone speaker at full distorted blast?

I reckon it's because no-one actually knew what the Hell urban music is meant to be and they got fed up trying to justify it. I suspect it was just a reactionary award when they were getting stick for not properly recognising black artists, as it seemed to lump so-called R n' B, hip-hop, soul etc together as one genre. I can't understand dropping Best Pop and Best Rock awards. Those are, IMO, the genres the UK does best. Surely without a pop category, you rule out the likes of the Sugababes, Robbie Williams, Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Girls Aloud and so on (not that they would necessarily have been elligable for nomination, but you see what I mean).

In answer to your second question, I fear not.

To be honest the Brits are a joke anyway. A lot of the acts are just the flavour of the year awards. Quite a few times you never see a act repeat the following year.

Just seems a dumb idea of the Brits to drop 3 awards. Oh well, they know best

And don't forget they dropped Best Dance a couple of years ago too. I am surprised they have any genres left.

Urban music is credited with the MOBO's and besides the Brits don't mean as much as they used to.

Why do they bother with The Brit Awards?
It's just an excuse to try and sell crap music to the masses.

We've heard it all before.

Music died years ago.

Maybe it means the ridiculous term is on its way out. There's no such thing as the urban genre.

what is urban, r&b, soul, rap??

Basically no its not on its way out, maybe in britain but in the us 13 out of the top 15 singles on the hot 100 are 'urban', mainly rap or r&b or a mixture of both, 5 out of the top 10 singles in the UK are also urban

In the US, that rap crap is all you hear anytime you turn on the radio. The days of having a variety are over (in the US anyway). Hell, even Madonna can't get a hit over here anymore. "Sorry" went to #58 and "Get Together" didn't even hit the top 100!

Yes, all rap is crap but Madonna should be at the top of the charts regardless.

Gold*rapp yeah good music

The Brits as a previous poster said mean nothing now. Most of the genres are no longer true.
R&B isn't real R&B anymore, Urban well..... Dance who the hell cares really
Scrap the Brits re-organise it with the genres properly classified and maybe people will care about them again.
