Telephone Extension Connection
I am planning to install an extension from my Master socket. The extension length is pretty long, so I'm planning to use twisted pair cable so that interference is minimised. I already have 3-pair cable.
My question is, do I use one-pair (two wires) for each of the three terminals, or do I split one-pair for two terminals etc. Advice appreciated. Thanks |

I would personally split the pairs so each terminal has only one wire connected to it (I'm a BT engineer BTW). To be honest though it really shouldn't make any difference either way if the cable is good quality.

On which two terminals should I use the 'split pair' on? I presumme then that the third terminal doesn't bennefit from the 'twisted pair' interference rejection? Thanks |

Ditto brownboyjnr
To connect the wires 'by the book' , connect as follows:- Blue with white stripes - terminal 2 Orange with white stripes - terminal 3 White with blue stripes - terminal 5 Terminals 1,4 and 6 are not used on a standard analogue phone line so ignore them. Also if the twisted pair cable you are using is CAT5 cable then you really don't have to worry about any interference crossing over onto the extension. Just wire up as above and everything will be fine. (ps, what you asked is correct. Terminal 3 is the bell ringing circuit so should not cause any problems with interference, regardless of whether you split the pair or not.) Last edited by Dave3622 : 29-08-2006 at 22:47. |
