befotre you start,i'm sure you must have the core pocket media player(TCPMP) installed on your pda.the link is here
http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/download
this is the best video player for pocket pc's and it's free.
(1)the best video format for playback on a pocket pc is divx or xvid ,like the movie files downloaded over the internet ,so you would need a software that can convert a ripped dvd movie to any of the two formats.don't waste your time with wmv.it isn't as good.the player above will play all these formats including audio and mpeg1 files.
i've used a few programs to convert but the one i like best is called mpeg4 direct maker, from artech365,the trial version you can obtain from the internet.
it's good for full dvd's as it will also convert with the subtitles as well.you will need to have the divx and xvid codecs installed on your system.it also converts mpeg1.mpeg2,vmv,quicktime mov files and is the best i've used in converting to mobile phone formats like 3gp and mp4 aac as it will convert from any format unlike quicktime pro which just accepts mov and certain avi files.you will have to convert to 320x240 resolution for your ipaq model to play the video full screen.to play fullscreen on a vga ppc ,you will need to convert to a resolution of 624x352.
for pictures, the best app i have used is resco photo viewer.
for music, windows media player is still better than the few i've tried considering software stability, even though windows media player 10 mobile, which isn't on your model's operating system,is the best.
if you are using a sd card,it's better you buy a usb2 card reader to tansfer images ,videos and music, instead of using the activesync, which is far slower and in my opinion is only good for installing software and synchronizing contacts and other outlook items.
