Naiko Home Cinema Package
Niggle
08-12-2002
Anyone got any further info on this package?

I've noticed in the national press that Safeways are currently offering these (at their larger store) for only £399.

it contains a Widescreen TV with built in DVD player and a separate Video, plus a 5 speaker system with sub woofer!

Sounds too cheap to be any good, but anyone have any Naiko products? I've never even heard of them before!

Thanks in advance...

My parents just purchased the package last week. I went round and installed it for them, and it appeared to be a reasonably well put together system. So far as the cinema surround is concerned, I only tested the system with Silence of the Lambs DVD, which appeared to work okay. Initial set-up was a bit difficult using the menus, but, once all buttons were tweeked to allow the surround sound to operate, it gave a reasonably good output.

One flaw I found is that it seems to be unable to identify when an Audio CD has been inserted, and tries to read it as a DVD? (see earlier posts from Max Woolf on this site - found by searching for threads with 'NAIKO' in the search mechanism.) Unfortunately, as my parents have just got the package, I haven't had a chance to mess about with all the settings to find a remedy.

The Video seems to be easy enough to operate and has Six Heads which gives good sharp playback and recording. I didn't have to go through an intensive training programme to show my pensioner parents how to set up the timer record function...they worked it out for themselves. Proof enough of its simplicity I would say!!!

Good luck if you wish to go ahead and purchase.

Allan.

My Dad is probably going to buy this on Friday and I will have the likely job of setting it up. Is it easy to set up?

Setup was reasonably easy. The only thing I had any problem with was the wires into the back of the TV for the surround speakers. The fitments are like your standard HiFi spring clips. It took a little while to get them to contact correctly, then once they had contact correct, it was just a case of refering to the manual for final menu tweeking options to give the desired output.

So far as playing music CD's is concerned, I'll be giving my old fella a phone. He contacted their help desk to check to see if CD's should play okay. They answered with a ???? and put him in contact with a local technician who said it would be £40.00 if he come out and managed to get the thing to play CD's. He was going to call the technicial out on Monday if he had the chance, unfortunately, all I asked him about yesterday was how good santa was to me, oh, and why Santa never supplied me Panny TU-CT20 on this day of giving!!!

Watch this space - I'll update you later with the result of the music CD 'fault'.

PS - hope you are having a good festive period.

Has anyone got the code to make the Naiko N2866 (i.e. the Safeway one!) multi region? I have found codes for other Naikos but not for this one.

I have no advice regarding regions - no luck finding a fix yet.

Installation was pretty easy. The style (silver) is quite nice. It does not look cheap at all. The surround sound is good, apart from limitation noted below.

But I'll be taking it back because:

1. Only region 2 - I have loads of USA DVDs.

2. Additional speakers are only activated when playing a surround sound DVD. They're silent under all other circumstances. - I want speakers that I can have on at will, for a "wider", richer sound.

3. Wide screen is good. But I feel conned by the "28 inch" reference. For non wide screen programs or older tapes and DVDs your choice is a 28" screen with fat people (due to stretching of the picture to 16:9), or a measly 21.5" display (at the normal 4:3 setting).

4. In 4:3 setting the screen flickers badly at times - this is definitely a fault.

3. The TV stand was chipped in 2 places.

Having said all th\at, it's remarkable value for money - just not for me.

I set it up fully today. I have to agree with some of your points including the region change, 4:3 and older VHS tapes. I didn't have any problems with the stand with the exception that the TV is difficult to set on it. I found the "Cinema" option via the 16:9 button was able to cope better with 4:3 programmes. I had to disconnect the speakers after viewing a 5.1 DVD so as I was able to get sound back on the TV. I don't know (or certainly couldn't find) any method that allowed me to have the speakers set up when I wasn't using the DVD player that allowed sound back via the speakers on the TV. I had to disconnect the speakers. If anyone knows how to combat this problem that would be most helpful. I also could not tune in RTE1 and Network2 (Irish) to the TV, but could on the TV.

Sorry that last sentence was suppose to be "I also could not tune in RTE1 and Network2 (Irish) to the VCR, but could on the TV."

Indo,

The sockets behind the TV for the L & R front speakers have an internal cut out switch.
You can buy versions of these connecters that allow the internal speakers to remain connected. They'll be relatively easy to install if you tend to do that kind of stuff. There'll be no cosmetic impact. They should be available from any regular electronics parts store such as Radios Shack/Tandy or a Maplin.
These replacement sockets have a flat middle slot and a circular hole on either side of it. Plug the speakers in using one of the circular holes and the internal speakers will cut out, turn the plug round to use the other circular hole and the internal speakers will remain connected.

Good luck Wal

I bought this system just before christmas, and on the whole it seems pretty good for the money. Can anyone help with two questions I have:

1. The DVD is supposed to play MP3 audio files. When I download some of these on to a disc the DVD player doesn't recognise them. The handbook says that I should be able to see a list of files and folders, but I am not getting anything on the screen.

2. Can anyone who has this system tell me whether their video has the Video+ auto programming system? Mine doesn't but it has PDC written on the front.

My understanding is that you can have PDC separately to video+. I hae not got video+ on my Naiko video - I have not checked if I hae pdc.

does the chap form Safeway know the code for Multi region? it would be very much appreciated - i got Buffy Series 1 - REgion 1 for Xmas - and can't play it

any repsonse would be great

Can anyone help regarding playing MP3s on this system. The handbook says that I should be able to see a list of files if put in a CD of downloaded MP3s, but I can't get this to work. Has anyone done this?

Does the Naiko 2866 (Safeway) have zoom but WITHOUT a constant onscreen "zoom on" display? And does it also have adjustable dynamic range (compression) in the audio set-up window?

If no to either of these, can anyone recommend a DVD player that DOES? Thank you.

Hi I have purchased the system from Safeway and am generally pleased with it re picture quality and sound but I have had the same problem 3 times in that the tv has failed to initialise after being turned of . Each time the same problem a horizontal line transistor giving way. This appears to be a real problem has anyone else had such a problem or is this as I suspect a batch problem with a particular set\sets manufactured at the same time. i bought the tv from Diss Safeway I'm concered that after the warranty runs out I'll be stuck with a dodgey set any suggestions? thanks
