Printing digital photos
Saffron
30-08-2006
Hi,

I normally go to tesco and get my photos printed.

Just wondering if there are alternative companies anybody could recommend.

Recently I found that they trimmed some of my images from the top/bottom. Photos were taken at max resolutions.

Get an Epson PictureMate and do the job yourself?

Thats quite cheap. What is the quality like? Are they printed on that card type paper?

They're absolutely the same quality as a proper photo. They are printed on the same type of paper too.

I just have a 40 quid cannon printer, set the print quality to high and use high quality glossy paper and it comes out like the shops.

Assuming that provides you with all the ink you need and it's one photo per sheet then that costs you 22p per print. Get someone else to do it for you and it the cost can come down to as low as 5p per print and may even be better quality. Home photo printing is alright for the odd photo but not for bulk printing.

Tesco I found were rude and unhelpful. I prefer to use ASDA, I have gone in with over 300 photos to be printed and have always got them back in an hour, without moaning and saying I would have to do a 24 hour service like Tesco did.

If you have access to a Costco locally - they will print for about 4p/print (for over 100), prices are slightly higher for less. Plus you have the fun of loading them from your own media onto their computers (childs play) - They offer a 1 hour service (or whilst you shop).

I'm sure that there are plenty of others out there, eg Boots, Jessops, to name a few. and dont foget your local independent.

Most options are far cheaper than diy and the prints will probably last a lot longer. Single prints at home are expensive, but fine for the fun, or I need it now syndrome!!!!

I use dlab7.com now. Professional prints, super quality. I used to use Photobox, but after comparing prints, the quality of theirs isn't that special.

The dlab7 website looks quite amateurish they talk about E6 and C41 printing, who understands that?

If I only need a few I do them at home on my epson printer.
If I need a lot done (like after a holiday) I go to Boots because if you get over 100 photos (24 hour processing) they only cost 7p each and you get 4 points (same as 4 pence) per £1 you spend with a boots advantage card.
The last time I did this (a few months ago) the prices were as follows:

15cm x 10cm (6"x4")
quantity 1 hour 24 hour
1-19 40p 30p
20-49 30p 20p
50-99 20p 10p
100+ 20p 7p

18cm x 13cm (7"x5")
quantity 1 hour 24 hour
1-19 45p 35p
20-49 35p 25p
50-99 25p 15p
100+ 25p 12p

I tend to get the 7x5" because they cut less of your picture off than 6x4". I print the 6x4" at home so if I need more of the picture to be included I take them to boots.

That's not Tesco's fault, and the resolution has nothing to do with the cropping.

Most cameras take pictures at a ratio of 1.33:1, 6x4 prints are "more rectangular" (1.5:1).

Best bet is to take your photos with plenty of border, then use photo editing software to crop them yourself before you print.
