Converting MP3's to Mono

I appreciate there is not much demand for this, but is there a way to convert MP3's to mono? I have a track with people talking, (Derek and Clives' Come Again) but one of them is in the left ear and the other in the right. Being completely deaf in my right ear, i only get half the conversation!

I have a headphone splitter that's in mono, i just plug my 'phones into one of the ports but is there a way of changing the MP3 so i don't have to use it, it's very lossy and quiet.

You can do this in Audacity, a free audio editor - or at least with "ordinary" WAV audio files. I haven't tried importing an MP3 file into Audacity - don't use them myself

But assuming you can get the file into Audacity you can split the two channels of the stereo and convert both to mono. Then mix down the two tracks and export as an MP3. The finished result will be a mono audio file.

Splitting and mono conversion are simply a few clicks of the mouse and selecting menu options, they take no time at all to perform. Even the mix down is pretty quick.

The biggest problem I can see is getting the MP3 into and out of Audacity. It does not have built in MP3 support but can use an external MP3 codec. As I don't use MP3s I haven't experimented with how good bad or indifferent this process is. But the Audacity website does have details about this if you dig around a bit.

You will need to download the LAME encoder codec for audacity to output mp3.
