Apple IPod and ITunes Software

Is it necessary to install ITunes Software on a PC before you can operate an IPod or to put it another way, can you use an IPod without ITunes?

Can you drag'n'drop MP3 files onto an Ipod using Microsoft Explorer?

They'll copy over to the iPod, but the iPod interface won't be able to play them as they'll be on a different bit of the disk.

The only way to have files that will play is to use iTunes, Winamp or any other software which can copy files to the iPod properly. I'm not sure of any others, as I don't have an ipod! Best choice I ever made!

Why do so many people want to drag and drop files manually? In iTunes I can just drag and drop files to my iPod (or whatever playlists I may choose to setup) to my hearts content. The fact that you can control the file structure is a bit stupid as well, I never have any need to look at the files whatsoever. If I ever did need to find an album or something I could just go straight to it in iTunes or just spotlight it and get to it instantly. I can understand people maybe not liking iTunes on the whole but I just don't get this obsession some people seem to have with doing stuff manually in this fashion.

It's not about "doing things manually" but rather about having the freedom to use whatever software package or transfer method you prefer.

The fact that I can control the file structure is vital to the way I keep my music organised. My music is all stored on a completely seperate hard disk, which is shared between all of my computers.

Having the music organized properly into folders means that it's easy for anyone to access the music, using whatever media player they want. My own personal preference is Winamp, and I don't use the media library to access files. If I want to play a file, I navigate to it's folder, and play it that way. If I wish to play an album, I navigate to the folder containing the album, and right click on it, and press play this folder in winamp.

If somebody asks me to find them a particular song on a particular album, I can find it in seconds because I know the file structure. i can then quickly copy it onto cd for them in either Audio CD or Mp3 format.

With iTunes you can maintain that structure in a folder, while having the ability to use all of the features in iTunes - including allowing you to burn an Audio or MP3 CD.

The point being....I don't need to. I can already do it all without installing iTunes. I prefer to maintain my own file structures, less chance of a program going wrong and wiping out all my files!

With iTunes, Apple can ensure that when you want to purchase downloads you will automatically be directed to their online store. Not a problem for those experienced in surfing the net but the net virgins will hand their money over to Apple without asking any questions about alternative sources of music downloads.

Incidentally, the French Government want to end this monopoly that Apple have created.

fair enough - but i don't get it either.

with iTunes, all you have to do to update your iPod is connect your iPod to your computer, and it does it all automatically.

and it's browse view is more intuitive and makes things easier to find quickly than i remember the windows media software.

I disagree. I find iTunes really hard to navigate as it just keeps everything in one long list or smaller playlists and (as far as I can tell) it doesn't allow you to display tracks sorted by artist or album in the same way the Windows Media Player library does.

I also dislike the play controls - play/pause, rewind and fast forward, but no "stop" for some reason. Everything else seems to have one but not iTunes. Weird.

I'm sticking with Windows Media Player and refraining from buying an iPod.

The "browse" feature allows you to view a list of Genres, Artists and Albums and browse with them.

Why do you need a stop button cluttering the interface when pause does the same thing?

Because pause simply pauses the song, and stop completely stops it and takes you back to the start, and I kind of like to have the option to do both of these things - call me awkward and old fashioned.

What version of Windows Media player did you use the last time you used it. Version 10 is quite good at handling the media library, although 11 is far better than that. It displays all the albums by album name, including a picture of the album artwork. It also shows the first 4 tracks of the album, so you can judge which album it is, if you're unsure.

I still prefer to manually navigate though, but I mainly listen to just single tracks, and due to the organization of my file system, I know where they all are!
