ReBooting on BBC channels

Reports on toppy.org of rebooting on BBC channels.

Just checked mine, and re-boots or locks up on BBC1, sometimes within 60 Secs, sometimes longer.

Turning interactive off does not help matters.

Not affecting Humax 9200T or Matsui 1602PVR

Edit: mains power on/off does not help, rebooting getting worse.

It's something to do with the BBC channels on Mux1; firmware 5.12.25 does not appear to be affected.

Is it transmitter dependant, possibly?

There are quite a few reporting it in different locations.

What is it with the BBC and September? They all return from their summer holidays refreshed and indulge in a little Topfield Owner Abuse

I think the Bastille firmware will shortly be rechristened to a name not ending in ille if the previous version is OK.

Yep downgraded 30 minutes ago, seems stable.

And again, will it ever stop

Bit drastic of the BBC to switch off their transmissions in the South West to stop the problem

See BBC reception page...failed since 14:47

Looks like the simplest workround if you want to watch BBC1 etc is to start a recording and just watch it from the library a few seconds behind live transmission. Not tried it myself.
Richard
Edit might help if you go to ITV1 before starting the playback.

Very frustrating, I only bought my Toppy last Saturday, and had had a fairly stable week.

I upgraded the firmware yesterday, and within the space of 15 minutes tonight had 2 reboots and a lockup - all on BBC1 around 9pm. Plus a 0 bytes recording off Film4 earlier tonight, I think I'll be trying a few TAPs.

If you go here and look at post #115 (page 14) you will see that someone has written a TAP to overcome this problem. Thanks bdp!

I'm getting BBC from Midhurst ... and BBC is causing a reboot. I will try the TAP fix from DBC - glad there are some clever people that know what's happening

The TAP works, has BBC on for a few hours now with no reboot.

The link is http://www.offdigital3.freeserve.co....rash_v0.01.zip

- add this to your Auto Start directory.
- it may affect the interactive services; but they do still seem to run ...
- there is no remove/no menus; take it out of auto start and reboot.
- it will only run on the 12.88 firmware (will just be ignored on others).

There is now a separate thread about the bug fix and what is probably causing the reloads. You can find it here

I installed it this morning and it seems to work OK.

I am glad someone found a way of fixing this bug as I am going away on holiday tomorrow and have quite a few programmes set to record.

Nigel, do you know yet if Topfield are aware of the problem and planning any firmware fix?
nwhitfield

Yes, as I've posted on the Toppy site, they're aware of the problem.

I don't imagine they're planning to ignore it, either, but I'm unlikely to hear anything until after the weekend.

The Bug!!!

I updated the firmware last week and within hours noticed problems, last Sunday I recorded Pick Of The Pops on Radio 2 for the wife and the day after when I went to check up on it in the archive the indication was that it was still recording what 24 hours later, I tried to stop the recording but no response although I could play the recorded material and no excessive space had been taken up on the drive, I had to re-boot the receiver to clear the problem and afterwards the recording had vanished from the archive, after reading about the problem with the BBC MUX and I have also been getting the same problems on both of my 5800's I decided to flash the Firmware with the earlier Jul 2006 5.12.88 version, no change whatsoever still getting the lock-ups on both receivers, should I wait until later this week or is it worth installing the TAP workaround?

5.12.88 is the latest version, not the earlier one, and it's the one that's affected by the current issue.

Either load the TAP workaround, which will fix it quickly, and maintain all the other advantages of the current firmware, or revert to 5.12.25

Both firmwares, and a guide to installation, are available via www.toppy.org.uk/downloads/firmware.php

I somehow managed to download and install the same 5.12.88 firmware twice, obviously not watching what I was doing, Version 5.12.25 now flashed to both receivers and appear to be okay, I presume the BBC MUX bug does not affect the earlier 5.12.25 or is this just an assumption?
Thanks for the advice.

No, it does not affect .25.

Unfortuneately, that would annoy me more

Need something more "upmarket", like Channel 4 perhaps

ITV ... emm, I remember watching that channel, was sometime ago. Are they still broadcasting
Barry

Reverted to bastille 15 Minutes ago (as the offending update should have stopped broadcasting at 9am)

No lockup as yet......early doors I know.

I was just about to dismantle the unit, replug all leads fit cooling fans - BUT first I looked on the form....

Hooray!!

Installed TAP and no probs:

Just looked at latest post to find that the problem has gone away(?). Ah, well.

Quick muse - why is it that there have been recurring problems with Freeview "reception" when that awful Mr. Murdoch doesn't have probs: with his satellites?

Could it be inadequate standards, pushing the envelope, lack of communication, or sloppy design? I wonder if Freeview suffers from Microsoft syndrome whereas Sky is an Apple - if you get my analogy.

Discuss (or more likely, rant)

Problem probably only gone away until that (or a similar)OTA gets repeated.

I concur with your Apple/PC analogy.

It's sort of: Toppy=PC, Sky=Apple, Other FV PVRs = ?
