ATA busy tone
bilbonvidia
02-09-2006
When I dial a PSTN number via voip and the person is engaged I do not get a busy tone, it just rings a few times and then goes dead. This is using the ata. When using a softphone I do get a busy tone. How do I get a busy tone when using my ata, is it likely to be a setting on it somewhere?

It depends on what ATA you have and how it is set up, could be something as simple as changing the call progress tone for busy.

And when you find that setting, this is the UK busy tone -

400@-19;10(.375/.375/1+2)

2 2 0 480 -19 620 -19 500 500

That it my current busy tone, do you know how the one you specified would look in that format?

You definitely have the wrong tone there then and need it changing for the UK style. You'll have to do some experimenting as I have no idea of your ATA's specification, and without sounding rude there's no way I'm trawling through a huge manual that you've posted (am sure you can understand have better things to do on a Sunday morning! )

I'd say though it will involve taking out most of the punctuations and a bit of lateral thinking - probably 1 2 10 400 19 .375 .375 or something like that. Have a play and maybe do lots of googling for your ATA settings to find out if anyone else with your model has put the settings up there.

Getting the UK style tones though is a big help - when my VOIP router arrived, it had US settings on everything. The ring style messed about with a PBX as it heard a long ring, then thought the person hung up because there was a pause, then treated the next ring as a new call (which meant voicemail and call steering wouldn't work properly). Plus the fault and busy tones are both the same; meaning I couldn't tell if someone was engaged or the number was unobtainable. One of my friends kept the settings to US as a novelty for about a week - they soon realised the novelty was a pain and it's far better to have the UK tones in the UK.

Thanks for your help, I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall with the documentation on this one though. I guess It's more trial and error sessions for me. I will continue to google the hell out of it as well may find something new.

Hehe yes I understand, you've seen the basic settings from me though so hopefully that will set you on your way. Alternatively I guess you could be really cheeky and email my string to Zoom, asking them how it would translate on one of their ATA's? Mine is for Linksys. Good luck.

I use VoIPStunt which is a sister service and I believe the address resolves to the same host, and on a PAP2 ATA when I call a number that is engaged I get the busy tone, though usually when calling the PSTN it's usually the PSTN that generates the busy tone, the ATA usually only generates the busy tones when handling SIP - SIP calls, hence when calling overseas you hear the overseas tones.

I see what you mean, I would have thought that the ata would merely pass through the engaged tone it got from the PSTN but for some reason I don't get one.

It depends on how the PSTN gateway is set up. What often happens is the call progress tones are indeed generated by your ATA and not passed through. The remote exchange will send a flag of, say, busy, which is passed back to the PSTN gateway, which then quite often will just pass the flag onto your ATA and leave it up to that to generate a tone.

Yes as said, most providers send a 'SIP Message' saying busy, when tells your telephone/ATA to make an engaged tone sound.. Some providers connect you to a media server which plays the beeping for you.

If you are not getting a busy tone, which ATA are you using?

Try

2 2 0 400 -19 400 -19 375 375

I have the same ATA and they are a real pain to configure!

Yep they are a pain. But a very good device, its a real shame they don't have better documentation for it. I figured out how to use a 2nd vop account using a prefix. I added it to a previous post.

Doubledecks do you get engaged tones, what voip service do you use? I still don't get one.

I'm using voipcheap.com, the above (sort of) works for me.

It's taken me months to work out how to work out dial strings, switching accounts and the rest of the configuration on this box - still not sure if it's right!

Have you played about with the gain levels? If so what do you find to be best in terms of volume for both PSTN and VoIP calls?

The port gains I have set are:--

Regionalization>SLAC configuration

Port Impedance = 370+620||310nF

Port RX Gain (GR) = 3
Port TX Gain (GX) = 3

Same settings on the Codec configuration screen too, seems to work ok for my cheapo cordless phone

I am finding that people ringing our land line number are complaing we are too quiet where as voip we are very loud.

Try changing the port gains on the slac configuration to 4, works fine for me on setting 3
