It seems to do everything! 5.1 and DTS decoder, HDMI output, etc...

Although having said that, by doing too much, I would imagine it doesn't do any of the things particularly good, but I don't know. I'd get one if I wanted a new DVD player right now, £40 is worth the risk I think.

Indeed, you can expect a cheap DVD to do anyting to the same standard as a moderate or expensive DVD player, every component will be a low spec to get the price point.

As Praxidike says at that price why worry and ALDI are fairly good with returns and it's not as if you are expecting top of the line quality for the price of a DVD boxset

I hope these findings are due to a good liquid lunch.

True what are their returns like.

Typically the local store is the only one that opens at 8am in the area on Thursdays.

Surely if the player has HDMI output all questions of quality are redundant?

Both picture and sound are being sent as a digital stream, thus no D/A processing is taking place.

So the signal from this would be to all intents and purposes as good as a player costing twice as much?

That's what I would think, but the problem is there's a bit of digital magic going on before it comes out the hdmi port ie:- the upscaling for example, so if the upscaling tech is crap then you get a crap picture...!! But like most people here I will more than likely try one out..?! you never know..!

True enough.

That said I've found that the chipsets are much of a muchness, and a lot of the cheaper players use the same basic chipsets as some much more expensive players, the difference is in the quality of the analogue kit. The chipsets are generally very cheap, so this company could well be using a decent one.

As you say we'll see!

does not play HDMI.

Upscaler is good having read boards from April when it was 1st released.

Good with xvid, divx. Can be quirky with Nero Digital. Maybe improved since???

Does not play HD Divx / Xvid.

It upscales only!!!! At least thats what I read.

Do any yet????

People are buying them because they supposedly convert upwards well.
Cant quote on that. It might only improve things for sets that display SD badly.

Yeah that's how I understand it as well.

No HD compatibility, upscale only, but it does upscale and has HDMI interface.

If the upscale is good, then this is a bargain

Quick O/T question: is there such a thing as an "HDMI Hub" yet?

ie something which takes two or more HDMI sources and allows some sort of switching between them?

There are quite a few AV receivers which allow 2 HDMI sources. Cheapest come in at around £250 - there are models from Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Denon, JVC etc - including a few home cinema kits.

There are also HDMI switch boxes which allow 2 or more devices to be linked and switched.

I noticed an HDMI switch box at the Sony shop in Leicester on Friday, and enquired as to its price.

£180.

Not at all.

There is a huge amount of processing that has to take place to output the DVD picture, regardless of whether it is upscaled or not. Such as delinterlacing, film pulldown, etc

Cheap players do this processing poorly, expensive ones do it well.

There are some reasons why expensive DVD players cost more you know....

For example, this is why the Oppo dv971h is such a highly rated budget upscaling DVD player. Not because of the upscaling, but because it does such a fine job of rendering the picture from the DVD in the first place.

Read this to find out all about the nuances of video processing.

Very much to do with the chipset.
Very often the cheaper makes 'jump ship' and buy-in something with the latest chipset.

Research required into the chipsets before purchase.

Without trying to advertise, try also cpc (.co.uk) and search for hdmi switch.

They have loads of good stuff but site hard to find what you want most of time.

Cheers

I was going to buy one and see what happens. My thread of look-up went as:
- Forum saying same for German Aldi.
- There people seem to say the chipset is Vaddis 888 - which looks decent and matches much of Aldi spec.
- Also, from that forum, appears that DVD player's been 'modded' to talk to USB. The Vaddis 888 chipset supports USB, but it's not exposed by case; presume just hooked up inside.

All in all sounds like an interesting box just to play with for pocket change price. So if you live in Leeds, don't be buying one till I've had chance

Cheers

Might be worth buying just for the Nero playback, if firmware improved from early year reviews.

Anyone buying one let me know how you get on.

Also if you have a SACD in your collection (does happen by mistake) try it in this player too!!!! Chipset plays it but does the firmware????
