Best VoIP ATA adaptor

Hi there,

I've been searching on the internet + this forum as I have been looking into getting a VoIP phone as we have scrapped the NTL phone line and now just have their broadband.

I wanted a VoIP phone that we could plug directly into the router over ethernet so that we don't have to have the PC switched on when making/receiving calls and also one that we could plug our old analogue DECT phone base set into.

I've noticed the Zoom VoIP ATA box

And also the Draytel VoIP ATA box as well.

I believe the Draytel box (by Draytec) is locked to their service.

The main thing I wanted from the box was reliability, a local STD code and also one that you did not have to pay a monthly credit/minimum yearly credit as we are hardly ever going to use it for outgoing calls (just use it for incoming calls).

Thanks, Mark.

For your ATA I would reccomend the Lynksys PAP2T. If you are only interested in incoming calls with a geographic number then sign up to a free Sipgate account.

Anything by Sipura or Linksys should do the job.

I have an SPA-3000 and Linksys PAP2 and they are both fine. They do take a bit of configuration to get just right but it is worth it.

Thanks for the replies - they have helped me quite a bit being new to VoIP.

What is better with these 2 box's?

Are they a lot easier to setup than the others?

Also I was wondering if the Linksys Link VTA-UV adaptor was the same sort of thing (other forums said Comet did the PAP2 for £19, but this is the closest I could find on the Comet site and then unlocked.

Thanks, Mark.

Isn't that a nuisance! What a great price, but absolutely no info about it published on the Comet Website.

I was personally wondering if it was worth dealing with voipon in Chelmsford, but I'm edgy about companies that insist on using PO BOX addresses.

I'm looking to get a fritzbox 7050, these look like fantastic ATA's, with the added bonus of having the broadband modem, router and wifi all in one box, but they are pricey for a beginner.

The Linksys Link VTA-UV looks identical to my PAP2 wchich I bought for around £26 (including P&P) from BroadBand Buyer last December. This was the PAP2 which was locked to Vonage. It would appear that the VTA-UV is also locked, possibly to Vonage also.
I unlocked my PAP2 as per the instructions on www.fatwallet.com/t/24/524641. Since than my PAP2 has worked flawlessly.

The user guide on the Linksys website more or less confirms that this is a Vonage locked system. If I hear any different, I will let you know.

I might look into that place in Chelmsford, as I only live in Harlow (20 mins away) + am out and about for work all of the time (sometimes in Chelmsford).

Thanks again for the replies, Mark.

This is the website. http://www.voipon.co.uk/

If the company does own a shop, or warehouse (and you find out where to locate them) do please let me know as I would like to order a fritzbox 7050 from them, but i'm very reluctant to do so until I know who i'm dealing with, and how good their reputation is etc.

Thanks

I can now confirm, courtesy of comet, that the linksys box is indeed locked to the vonage network.

May I recommend a Zyxel analogue telephone adapter. They have quite a good write up (take a look at the latest Computer Active Magazine if in doubt).
