Converting video files on PC to play on mobile DVR Archos AV530

I currently use PocketDivXEncoder (0.3.60) on my PC to convert video files to an avi file which i can then download and play on my portable handheld digital MP4 player = Archos Av530.

PocketDivXEncoder is good and very reliable but the only frustrating thing i find is that it takes on average around 25 to 30 minutes to encode a 1GB video file (too long )

Can anybody recommend any other convertor (preferably free if poss) that is quicker that this?

Does anybody know how "Lathe" (which you have to pay for) compares to PocketDivXEncoder?

I mainly convert .ts files at the moment which are recorded via aerial through a humax digibox.

I've used a few including Pocket & I'm afraid that all of them take a long time. Seems that's just the way it is with video conversion according to all the forums I've read on the subject. I've found it's best to leave them going overnight or when away from the PC and just let it get on with it, especially as it occupies most of the CPU.

IMHO..PockectDIxEncoder is probably about the quickest software I've tried and I've tried just about all of them !!

Encoding is just one of those things that takes a long time. The exact timings will depend on the spec and architecture of your PC.

If I'm going to be away from my PC (even for a few minutes) I use the drop down bar to select Highest CPU priority.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I currently record from the tv onto the hard drive on my Humax digibox which is a MPEG-2 format. I then transfer the recording onto the PC and then re encode to an AVI or MPEG-4 file to play on my mobile MP4 Archos.

I was contemplating whether it was possible to buy a Digital TV turner PCI slot card for the PC that as it recorded it automatically recorded into a format (ie MPEG-4 or AVI file at 480x 272 pixels etc...) that was compatible with my mobile MP4 Archos, that way there was need to convert the files.

Does anybody know if this is possible?
