The topic says it all.

I just moved in, and there's a BT line there already. However, when I called to reconnect, they said that because I'm under 18, they can't switch it on again. I'm 17.

The phone I'm not *really* bothered about, but I'll need broadband due to the work I'm doing. Any solution?

Get parents or family or older friends to set you up a phone line. You have to be 18 to sign a legally binding contract.

As stud u like says, you'll have to get someone old enough to sign up on your behalf and you pay give them the money for the bill.

Companies don't like offering credit to people under 18, as it won't be legally binding.

When myself and my girlfriend many years back set up home we had to get someone to be a guarantor for the phone, gas and electricity, as we were under 18, we had a little one so there was no way we could be without a phone or have pre-payment meters (couldn't take the chance of the meter cutting out and refuse to pay extra for inconvenience).

Ask a family/friend to sign up for the phone service and when they ask for the billing details just give them YOUR account number and sort code so payment can be made via direct debit.

As for Broadband, I had AOL under my own name when i was 16, They never asked for my DOB.

You could lie and say your 18 (if they ask) to get broadband as 99% of the providers don't offer credit checks anyway.

There are more and more providers jumping on the credit check band wagon these days so be very careful about that last bit of advice. But I suppose the worst that could happen is the credit check will bring a "not able to supply service" result.
