TF5800 + TUTV CAM - will it work?

I've currently got sky+ but want to ditch it because it's too costly and also only seem to watch what's on Freeview + TUTV anyway!

The TF5800 looks a blinding piece of kit - love the idea of the TAPS - and it's also TUTV compatible.

Or is it?

Given what seems to be happening with TUTV at the moment, is it worth investing in a TUTV CAM for it?

TIA.

TUTV still works on the TF5800 for existing customers at the moment but I'm not sure how new customers stand. You might find TUTV won't accept any new registrations other than for TUTV Anytime - that's the impression from their website anyway. Then there is the question of how long the existing service will continue even if you can still subscribe.

If TUTV is a deal breaker for you given the state of things hold off for a couple of months until TUTV Anytime actually launches. It should then be clearer if the Toppy + TUTV is still a viable proposition, or whether you're better with the Thomson Anytime pvr.

I also get the impression that channels are being reduced on the existing TUTV service, so you are paying the same for less.

Anytime could take off, or it could falter .....

One to watch from the sidelines for now I think ......

Thanks guys, very helpful.

I'll bide my time for a couple of months and then make a decision.

Cheers.

I emailed TUTV a week or two ago asking if I can subscribe without using the PVR they supply as I have a Topfield 5800. No reply as of yet.

I also think, this is one of the worst moves from topup, I think their days are numbered going down this route. Could be wrong, but if they just restrict it to their machinces only, sky and ntl have got that market in their pockets, plus with broadband tv emerging as well.

It certainly doesn't appeal to me - I don't want another device connected to the TV. It would be fine to offer as an option, but what about all their potential customers that don't need the box?

Considering the Thomson development costs, it is possible that TUTV will give Thomson a clear run for a period of time, and will allow other manufacturers to support Anytime at a later date (should the service prove a big success).

I went to PVR + TUTV to replace Sky, but after a while you realise that with a PVR the vast majority of the things you're recording are on the free channels, so I then dropped TUTV. Suggest a good freeview PVR like the Toppy and forget TUTV.

One of the main things to bear in mind about the new Anytime service is that TUTV will be choosing the programmes to supply to you over the 7 day period. Yes, there might be 100 hours available, but there is no guarantee that you will be interested in much of the material so selected (and then recorded onto the hard drive). Until you can get a clear indication of the actual programmes that will be made available, TUTV Anytime will be a bit of a pig in a poke.

I have now had a reply:

Quote:
“Thank you for your email.

Only the new Thomson DTR box designed solely for Top Up TV will be compatible with the new service. No other Personal Video Recorders (PVR’s) or Set Top Boxes on the market currently support the new Top Up TV Anytime service, even those with a standard Top Up TV logo

If you have any further questions, then please do not hesitate to contact us on 08712 712 712. We are open from 8am to 10pm daily.”

No thanks.
