BT Line Activation
zippyman
11-09-2006
A friend of mine recently moved into a new flat and noticed a BT phone socket in his flat. He contacted BT over the weekend to have the existing BT line reactivated.

BT agreed to do this for him, and told him it would be activated today (Monday)

He tried calling his new number on his mobile this morning and it was ringing (it was not doing this on Sunday) but his phone is not ringing.

He still has no dial tone and has tried another phone, but to no avail.

This morning I carried out out a line test for him using a BT Phone Box and I was told "one or more legs disconnected"

Does anyone know what this means, and how can we rectify the situation?

I've tried doing some research on the net but can't find any real answers.

Cheers for your time,

Zippyman

It means exactly what it said - one or more wires (legs) of the connection between the socket and the equipment at the exchange are incomplete. If a BT technician is not forthcoming then he needs to chase the original order.....

Oh well, my mate has got to wait a while before he can use his new landline. It turns out their is a problem related to the telegraph pole outside his house, BT engineer has been requested to pay him a visit, but he has to wait till 21st September.

Calls to his new landline number are being diverted to his mobile number and he does not have to pay line rental until the problem is resolved. His account is also being credited with £1 a day.

If any rewiring needs to be done, he's also been told he wont be charged for it.

So he had some good news and some not so good news.

Well, I was round my mates house this afternoon when the BT engineer arrived.

He checked the internal wiring and some of the external wiring.

He arrived at approx 1pm and left around 2:30pm... he could not finish the job as he needs to go up the pole outside my mates house, but the pole is dangerous and he's not allowed to climb up it.

He told us we have to wait for another engineer to come round with another vehicle with a lifting platform so they can look at the cabling from the telegraph pole.

He said they might come back today (which I doubt very much).. tomorrow, next week, next month...

I hope we dont have to wait too long.

D-Poles are a nightmare.

There few hoists in most areas so I would say the chances of it being done by the weekend are slim. I just hope the pole has good access because if someone parks in front of it and the hoist can't get into the pole then your friend will have to wait even longer.

update: mate got a call from BT this afternoon, was told hoist booked for Monday 25th Sept.

He's hoping things will be resolved at last.

Update:

I've just received a call from my mate (on his new BT line) which is now working. BT arrived at 9:45am this morning and got up onto the pole outside. They carried out a few tests on the line but experienced some issues, so went away to investigate. Anyway, another guy came back round about an hour ago and explained the problems, after going away for approx 25 minutes he came back and the phone line is now working. He put the fault down to a bad link in one of their green cabinets which meant the line was not connected to the exchange. Anyway, my mate is happy now. Although he has mentioned that 174 does not work - which he remembers at one time was used to report back your connected phone number? - he said the line just clicks and goes silent. Maybe someone can expand on this?

Anyway, he wanted me to keep you all updated in the progress.
