Just installed iTunes 7. It's VERY different.
Here's the iPod screen:

This 'embeded HTML' style interface is all a bit... Microsoft, though.

It's currently 'Determining Gapless Information' - does that mean it'll work on my 5G? I presume there'll be an iPod software update to make the games work.. maybe they'll throw that in.

Thank you. As I'm not clairvoyant I didn't know how much of Steve's presentation was going to be about iPods and how much about other products, so I put it in the main computing one just in case.

It was about iPods originally, but it's now a general 'Apple Announcement Discussion' thread.

They seem to have changed the network music protocol in iTunes... my PowerBook running iTunes 6 can no longer connect, and apps like ourTunes no longer work. Bah.

iTunes is much better - much more logical.

Stupid question: What's gapless playback?

The title of your thread suggests other than this.

But hey your choice.

I just figured that as you have started a thread on a subject which already has a thread devoted to it in 'portable devices' you weren't familiar with that section of the forum.

A lot of CDs are 'continuous play' - there is no silence between the tracks. All mixed dance compilations are like this, as are some studio albums (such as Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon), and live albums.
If you play one of these back on an iPod currently, you'll get a small bit of silence between tracks, which is very annoying.

Ah I see. It doesn't seem like a feature to make a big deal out of though (but then I suppose it is Apple ).

Ooh.. just noticed in preferences, 'Allow iTunes control from remote speakers' - updated Airport Express on the way?

There's also an option to include CD-Text. That's been bugging me for a while.

And I've just noticed that my iPod now let's me set a new volume limit. I think I'll just whack that up

And a brightness setting.

trust me, listening to a mix with gapless playback is a major pain the millisecond jumps ruin the entire mix

Is it just me that thinks they may have to change the name of the iTV when they bring it over here?

Yep. iTV (sic) is the name distinctly lower-case for "interactive television", see Here.

And, of course, ITV networks UK. (being the money-grabbers they are, they'll probably lease the name for some miwyons)

Netgem have the iPlayer, so they'll have to come up with something soon.

iTV won't be the name anywhere - it's just a working name.

A good show overall for Apple I think (though the iMac updates were very significant and not given too much coverage IMO). I like the iTV concept, having a media centre, but using a normal TV - nice. Just put some TV tuners in new Macs as standard please and it'd work better - a real competitior to Windows MCE/TiVo.
