Which cable to use for socket extension

Hi,

I currently have a main socket coming in from outside into the front room downstairs. It is the one with the bottom half that comes off (nte5 or something?). I want to run an extension from that upstairs for dsl use. I also want to possibly run a phone extension further into the front room.

If I get a face plate that has a phone socket and dsl socket, i believe that splits the signal at the source. Therefore I wouldn't need splitters round the house. Correct?

Do I also take it that from the rear of this new plate i run a cable upstairs to the dsl socket and a cable into the front room for the phone socket?

Or would each extension be used for both if necessary?

Would I be better off just running a couple of normal extensions and using splitters?

How do i test my line for noise and signal ratio (SNR and so on...)? My modem doesn't seem to have a diagnostics page that allows this. I want to know if I need CW1308 or Cat5 cable.

So many question, sorry.
Thanks

Stu
