This really depends on your taste in music but why is it that all the totally rubbish songs seem to end up at number 1 now adays.

I mean I have been on here criticising how much I hate Scissor sisters - don't feel like dancing, JT - Sexy back, Shakira - hips don't lie, and sure as hell they all go number 1, I mean i'm not talking about songs you wouldn't really be fond on but listen to anyway, I'm talking about songs that when they come on you have to turn the radio off or over, thats the way I feel about these songs,

Anyone else feel the same??

I mean who buys this c$$p

It was proved a long time ago (by Roger Cook if I remember correctly) that anyone can buy the No. 1 spot..... if you're willing to stump up the cash.

I have to agree the UK Top 40 has been totally rubbish for the past few years, it confirmed it for me when Crazy Frog made #1. Ive not listened to UK music/radio stations for about 3yrs. Ive totally gone american, if i hear a british song i turn it off or change channel, makes me sick lol, UK music is a joke and its just getting worse. Im sorry but it is

I totally agree, you are guaranteed that the worst release of the week hits number one and crazy frog was an excellent example

Agreed with the OP except on Shakira, lol...but its been like this for years now. When the likes of Crazy Frog, Teletubbies & Bob The Builder get #1s as they have, you just know the Brits are taking the pi$$.

I also listen to American radio and I have for a few years now - about 5/6 years I think . There are some really good british artistes out there but, most of them do not appear on the charts. I was surprised to find out that one of my favourite artistes, Alexi Murdoch is british. It seems people don't care about a band or artiste unless NME has given their album a million stars and the artiste has slagged someone off.

As had been said many many times on these forums before, singles are mostly bought by kids hence the state of the charts.

I don't really care. Does anyone really pay attention to the singles charts anymore?

They've been a joke for half a decade now.

Precisely. Look at the albums charts where you will see, this week alone, Bob Dylan, Freddie Mercury, Iron Maiden, Billy Joel, Nina Simone, Rolling Stones, etc

See, album charts are more diverse. Although we do get the shit, we also get some quality acts charting in the album chart. Album sales are what counts. I mean, Robbie Williams only sold something like 7,000 copies of his dreadful new single and that made number 4! Albums tens of thousands weekly.

I finally gave up on the singles chart when that CF ringtone reached #1, finally confirming that they were a waste of time.

The album chart does seem to represent how the singles chart used to be with releases entering the chart and going up, rather than falling after their first week. Ste. is indeed correct when mentioning there is more diversity there as the majority of buyers for it tend to be adults rather than kids.

Still, including download figures to the CDs bought to the single charts is a very desparate act, a short-term fix to a problem that is in terminal decline.

CD's will be gone within ten years.

Maybe album CD's though will still be around.

I have to entirely disagree with you, if anything the Singles Chart is in one of its best conditions at the moment and is quite interesting. In fact, if you took some time to look at the charts you would see that tracks now do go in at lower places and often work there way up the chart, i.e. Scissor Sisters LW #4 and this week #1. If anything the inclusion of downloads has improved the singles chart.

Album CDs will certainly be around in the future as not everyone can get to grips with MP3 and how to use them.

I never rely on the charts! Ever!

And my hatred for the charts has still risen since Shaznay Lewis 'You' reached 56.

But that was partly London Records fault.....pricks....

Just ignore me, I'm having a Bitch-Fit!

The album charts offer something for everyone, with rock, hip hop, pop and indie music all in there.

I can't get to grips with the bloody awful sound quality you get with MP3s! Until a legal download site offers the same quality as CD (or better) without DRM restrictions, CD will remain the dominant format.

Personally I buy most new albums on vinyl, since this seems to offer the best sound quality and doesn't allow for any kind of DRM nonsense. I still buy CDs where no vinyl version is available, though thankfully most new albums are available on vinyl again (after something of a vinyl decline in the 90s).

Not sure how you can get 'better', as such, because the CD audio format is uncompressed.

But I agree with you, I for one will not be giving up purchasing CDs for a long-time yet, for various reasons. As for sites increasing quality, can't see it happening when so many kids are used to hearing music heavily compressed at 128K or 192K files formats. Why offer them more when they are willing to accept less.

I resent the music I like being described as crap!

I love the charts at the moment. For the first time in a while, they have all my favourites on it. Scissor Sisters,Shakira and The Feeling.

I don't know why people moan, its good music that makes you feel good! It makes me wonder what people want?

They could always up the sample rate and quantisation depth. A download site offering losslessly compressed files with a 96 kHz sample rate and a 24-bit depth would be offering quality better than that of a CD. Sourcing the high-quality material would be difficult at the moment though.
