It would be sad if BT close the site completely, but I guess they might need to to cut costs.
I went there earlier this year the place is amazing, well worth a visit.

Don't know about closing, but Goonhilly is supposed to have the fasted Broadband connection in England, cannot remember the speed quoted but was extremely fast, complete (would it be 100mb) Encylopaedia Britannica download in about 15 mins...

I went to Goonhilly about 3 weeks ago, shame with the news.
Thier 100 mb connection is not the fastest connection in the world, it is equal to the connection I use in my office (Vodafone). And it's possible a lot of other people use the same sort of speed at work too.....

Just had a look at www.btplc.com/news, it quotes that one of the dishes is to be dismantled, but there are no plans to dismantle the other dishes, misunderstood the news about Broadband speed, it is 100mbps, and thought to be the first time such speeds have been available at an Internet Cafe, free fo use at Goonhilly it seems...

It's not suprising at all.
Sattelites are pretty much redundant nowadays. I wouldnt be suprised if more than half were not in use any more.

Cables are far superior

Eh? Cables are far superior to Satellites, not where long distance/Trans-Atlantic telephone calls are concerned, satellite head and shoulders above cable(s)

More than fibres? the speed of light?

The ironic thing is there's a much more impressive site not a long way away, but what they do there is quite secret. More dishes, bigger dishes, very high security etc...

Slight problem with fibres, they won't quite reach Australia, or the USA, or Indii/Pakistan, or ......well, the 'other site is probably whats' left of the 'Early warning system', Fylingdales and all that, one not to far from us, run by the American, monitors non-civilian air traffic as far as I know... top secret..

I don't know of the site near Goonhilly, but he one close to us is Menwith Hill, in N.Yorkshire, it is run by the Americans, and most certainly monitors air traffic....suspect it used to be part of the early warning system (4 minute warning and all that), and they used to monitor Russian aircraft overflying the UK...

Yes they can.

Someone at work used to be in the cable laying business, they've laid cables across the Atlantic, Siberia practically everywhere.
