Was watching the x factor the other day when i thought! why go through all of this to make a second rate performer a star when we have plenty of talent out there that music business have simply just thrown away! Look at the likes of Terence trent Darby! an incredible voice!, Paul Young, the list goes on! can anyone tell of more that have simply been left aside from the music business! bringing these greats back would be great for music lovers all round! Yes im all for new talent but why not give up on the greats! Such a shame the way the music business is conducting itself these days.

Terence Trent Darby didn't have his career thrown away by the music industry, he rather threw it away himself...

I'm not sure I'd class Paul Young or TTD as greats.... but I understand your point OxO... and agree.

I'm not sure how many "greats" there have been over the past 10-15 years though.

As for the X-Factor...... extremely funny... but musically, extremely dire.

I loved Classix Nouveau when I was young. Don't know that I'd class Sal Solo as a great singer though. Didn't Pete Burns once say he had a voice like a hoover?

Didn't Paul Young wreck his voice? I'm not sure how it happened, but didn't he try to tour a couple of years ago and people ended up asking for their money back, because he'd gone down-hill so much. Shame, as he had a very good, quite distinctive voice, if not great. Perhaps that was his problem, his style sounded like he was straining which is very bad for the voice.

I don't think shows like X Factor can be blamed for the lack of good singers. If anything, they are creating better than average singers, and after years of people complaining that pop stars can't sing live, they have to admit that these ones can, so have to complain that there's more to being a pop star than singing well.

He never really recovered from throat surgery in the mid-80s, not long after his career took off. He could record but it was never really up to touring.

Very unfortunate because he really did have a great white soul voice.

I remember when I used to work at TV:AM and later briefly at GMTV, there were only ever two guys who got the girls in the studio into such a hysterical frenzy whenever they heard that they were coming in and one of them was Paul.

Saw Paul Young on the 80s Here and Now tour 2 or 3 years ago in Newcastle. I may be being unfair-could have been having a one-off bad night-but he was really struggling with his voice. Top of the bill and embarassing to see people walking out on him.

If you're after a great new talent voice-wise I wouldnt look any further than Peter Grant. Leeds-based teenager who's already had a top ten album of jazz/pop standards with a voice well beyond his years.
