Hi we've got a couple of cheap old units to play VHS videos (Matsui - noisy ) and DVDs (Medion - refuses to play some DVDs sometimes & box display unit has failed )

Is it worth getting a combined unit to replace them? - I had been thinking of getting a DVD RW at some point - preferably with Freeview tuner... Any point getting HD ready stuf (if it's available )

Or should I just hang on for something 'round the corner'

Any advice appreciated...

Cheers

Mick

Why not get a DVD recorder as you are saying & put your VHS onto DVD then you will no longer need the VCR.

Seems to me it might be worth deciding if you are looking back or looking forward. You seem to be worrying about compatibility with three generations of recorded picture quality. What I mean is if you get some HD sources I would hardly think you will still find VHS acceptable.
I have not been able to watch VHS since I first saw standard DVD/Hard Disk recordings years ago let alone any comparison with High Definition.
My advice if you are already wanting HD quality then consign VHS to the past for a start; and that includes DVDs copied from VHS.
Just my opinion.

Richard

How about one of these, althought they are still not easily available after launching in June time. Can't vouch for it myself as I haven't bought it yet. Looks useful and has HDMI socket for upscaling to High Defn. Oh, and it has a freeview tuner and analogue tuner.

thanks for the responses guys...

The DMR-EZ45VEBS is in the right price range £250 - not much info on it on the website though & kept getting navigational errors...

Had seen the 95 before - looks perfect - apart from the price ~ £500 cheapest I have seen it - I don't think they'll be on ebay for a while LOL

We need vhs capability cos the kids have got millions of the things...

This one is within your price range.

No HDD or Freeview tuner but dual analogue tuners for recording on DVD and VHS should the fancy take you.

If you dont want to archive recordings (to DVD) then your best bet is a PVR with twin tuner. For Sky subscribers, Sky+ is a must but for non subscribers then a Freeview PVR gives the best convenience and flexibility.

If you need to archive recordings then a Freeview DVDR with a large HDD will do the trick.

I spoke to a local TV shop guy - he says he has loads of combo units in for repair - the VHS bits tend to be cheapo & when they fail the DVD & HD units can't function properly either... So that's put me off those.

He sells mainly Sony stuff, says he always has loads of Panasonics in for repair & Philips - no chance of getting repairs done... It's true, there are no Philips repair agents in our area - hope my telly holds out

looks like it just back to cheapo parts to keep us running - if you only pay £30 you can only lose £30 LOL

Referred to earlier in this thread, the DMR ES30 from Panasonic is not, at current typical high Street off-load prices, a good buy (£230 typically).

The model has been replaced by the DMR EZ45 which is an improvement in many ways (and not merely for the additional features Panasonic has incorporated).

A major electronics chain which takes its name from a fiery object in the sky now has the EZ45 on web sale at only a fiver more than prices being charged by others for the out-of-date ES30. And as the store is offering store collection if you wish (so no delivery charge) it's a good buy. . .

Agree that th DMR ES30 is not a good buy - it's out of date and missing a freeview tuner, High Definition upscaling and an HDMI socket. For a few quid more you can pick up the newer DMR ES45 with the above mentioned features and have it multi region - check the web. Can recommend here - that's where I got mine from.
