Portable Air conditioning Units
Lordly

Hi all... is there any one here who has or has knowledge of a portable Air Conditioning unit. I would like some details of make.. cost..performance etc. Being as my wife and I are golden oldies we feel the heat something terrible and am considering buying one for next year but am undecided what type. I have ruled out a split system as it wopuld be only for one room so that only leaves a portable.
Ny calculations tell me that for the size of the sittng room and bedroom I would require one of about 10,000 btu's
Please help.... Frederick

You'll need some way to seel the room properly otherwise they arn't all that effective - that can reduce the portability some what - although with the rectangular exhausts some units have, sash windows and a cusion you might be able to make a decent seel.

They can be pretty noisey though, which can make speaking to people nearby difficult, a properly installed split system is much quieter.

Hi Kev... yes I agree a split system would be much better BUT that would be dedicated to one room and the cost would be formidable.

I bought a Honeywell "Coolmaster" portable air conditioning unit in 2001, for about £800. I think they've come down in price a bit since then.

Found it an absolute boon. Lowers the temperature by a decent margin, and you really notice the difference. Always reliable, too.

I tried a portable one a couple of years ago, no good for bedrooms - too noisey.

This year I bought a split air conditioning unit from B&Q, they were reduced (20% off), but it was a self install system with pregassed tubing and quick fit connections, meaning no engineer required. It also works as a heater aswell. It does need a big hole drilled through the wall (about 4" diameter), but B&Q sold a dedicated cutter for the whole installation.

I had the whole thing installed up and running with 3 hours and cost less than £460. Well worth it
