iPod Freeze after Software Update
Tony@home
18-09-2006
Hi, I've been reading all the posts about iPod's freezing and my problem seems to be a little more serious, so I thought I'd ask if anyone has had the same prob and possibly found a solution.....

I use a 60gb Video iPod with iTunes 6 on an XP2 PC - worked flawlessly until yesterday.

I started iTunes. Message said that iTunes 7 was available, so downloaded it, installed it, worked fine.

Connected the iPod and received a message that an update was available. Again, downloaded and installed successfully.

After I restarted my PC, started iTunes, connected the iPod, and the 'pod screen was showing the usual "Do Not Disconnect" message.

However, after about 2 mins the iPod screen froze and stopped flashing. I left it for quite a while, knowing that sometimes it takes time for the sync to complete. But this time, it was still frozen after a couple of hours.

Since then, I've tried lots of things. Doing the iPod reset works and the main menu screen is displayed again. But after pressing any of the buttons and hearing a single click, it freezes again. I've connected the reset iPod to the PC with and without iTunes running, and the ipod is always recognised, but the iPod itself can't be operated.

I tried using the Restore feature of iTunes 7. It starts doing its thing, but when the iPod freezes, so does iTunes.

Today I did an iPod reset while it was connected to the PC with iTunes running. I got a message saying that the iPod software may be corrupt, and did I want to reset (loosing all songs)? I said yes, but after a few seconds another message appeared saying that the process could not continue due to an unknown error.

I've tried all combinations of solutions mentioned in previous posts, including swapping USB ports, doing the reset while connected to the mains adapter, uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, etc etc

So, it looks like iTunes is working fine until the ipod is connected and there's a corruption in the iPod software.

Is there any way to reset the iPod software without going through the PC? The freeze seems to stop any attempt to solve the problem through iTunes!

Any help or links appreciated!

Tony,

its not just you I've the same problem. my Ipod was syncing from Saturday until last night, when i gave up and un-installed 7.0 and went back to 6.0 and then found out that it updated the itunes library which wasn't compatible with 6.0 so i had to recreate my whole library. a real shame as i loved the cd cover browser

iTunes 7 puts updated software on the iPod, which could be dodgy. I would stay away from 7 for the moment, I installed it today and it's moaning it needs a newer version of Quicktime which isn't even available yet. That's enought to put me off.

I took my iPod to the Apple store today and the resident Genius thinks that either the new 1.2 software is corrupted and cant be overwritten with the older version, or the hard drive has corrupted sectors which is making disk use impossible. Because the iPod is only 5 months old they have agreed to replace it with a new model and transfer the serial number to the new machine so iTunes will think its still the same device. I'll be getting the replacement next weekend and will post again if iTunes 7 causes a repeat problem.
