I believe that the song that is no. 1 in the last chart to be published before 00:00 on December 25th is regarded as the Christmas number one, because as Christmas Day starts it is top of the charts.
So 1990 was the last song to feature Christmas then...

Back in 1994, the last year Christmas day was on a Sunday, they announced the new chart during the xmas TOTP show.
So when Radio1 did the chart later it was already known. This makes the song announced on the day the xmas number 1 and not the song that was number 1 at the start of the day. That song was number 1 according to sales of two weeks ago, not of the week upto Christmas day. |

The number 1 was East 17 in 1994, it was number 1 the week before, and xmas week and the week after, so the number 1 was the same all xmas day anyway.
I found out that the official number 1 is whatever is number 1 on the saturday, so if xmas day is on a sunday, whichever is number 1 when they do the chart at 6:50pm or whatever time it is, that is the offical xmas number 1. |

There is no chart on a Saturday though?
If the official no.1 is whatever is no.1 on Saturday and then also what is announced in the chart on Sunday, would that not give us two no.1's? |

I always thought that the Christmas No. 1 is the number 1 announced before Christmas Day. Thats only an exception when Christmas Day falls on a Sunday. That is when the weekly top 40 is read out across the nation. Whoever is number 1 in that list automatically becomes xmas no.1

Cos both East 17 and Westlife's crap had an xmassy feel with appropriate sounds, and Seasons In The Sun & Somethin' Stupid had christmassy stuff in the videos to the tracks. But, none of them feature the word in the lyrics to my knowledge.

As far as Christmas records go, they always "inflict" Slade and Wizzard on us every year but I don't understand why they don't re release Fairytale of New York at least every other year.
It would surely be guaranteed top 5. |
