Janet Jackson - 20 Years Old
I did a search and couldn't find a thread on this, so accept my apologies if I've missed it.
Anyway, this leaked last night, and after being extremely disappointed with 'Call On Me', I was unsure of whether I would like this album or not. 'So Excited' resoted my faith in Janet a little, but I was still a bit anxious of this living up to the hype, consider Janet, herself, said this was her going back to the 'Control' era. However, after listening to this last night, I couldn't be happier. It's not quite 'The Velvet Rope, but after the mess, that was the last two albums, this is definitely a return to form for Janet. I am actually shocked at just how good it is. There's isn't one single track that I could say was bad. Even 'Call On Me' sounds better as part of the album. Why is was released as the first single though is still a bit of a mystery, consider the quality of the rest of the tracks. Stand outs for me are: Do It 2 Me (This has to be a single!) Show Me This Body With U Take Care Get It Out Me Unfortunately, this will probably flop in the UK, due to lack of promotion, but this is by far her best album since 'The Velvet Rope'. Anyone else loving this as much as me? |

interesting I'll give it a listen. itunes doesn't have The Velvet Rope, which is irritating as I love that album but only have it on tape. I'll have to buy the cd but even that's proving quite tricky to find.

I've just 'obtained' this too... (in the same way I 'obtained' the recent Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Christina Aguilera albums).

I'm a huge Janet fan and I can't wait to get the album next week either. I didn't like "Call on Me" at all, but I love "So Excited." It's a shame she doesn't get more attention in the UK.

Track listing:

20 (intro)
So Excited (feat Khia)
Show Me
Get It Out Me
Do It 2 Me
This Body
20 Part 2 (interlude)
With U
Call On Me (feat Nelly)
20 Part 3 (interlude)
Daybreak
Enjoy
20 Part 4 (interlude)
Take Care
Love 2 Love
20 Part 5 (outro)
Roll Witchu (Bonus track)
Days Go By (Bonus track)
Janet called this album '20 Years Old' because it's 20 years since 1986's 'Control' album. Seems like she doesn't count her two albums before 'Control' (1982's 'Janet Jackson' and 1984's 'Dream Street'). I've actually lost count which album number this one is now. 'So Excited' has a sample from Herbie Hancock's 'Rockit'. I don't like it as the sample is annoying, doesn't add to the track and isn't a clever choice for a sample either. 'Get It Out Me' has a few lines sung to Afrika Bambaataa and The Soul Sonic Force's 'Looking for the Perfect Beat' (like LL Cool J Featuring J Lo's 'Control Myself' because Jermaine Dupri had a hand in both tracks). 'This Body' is dreary and monotonous. Overall it's an OK album. I'm still playing it and it'll take several more plays before I get used to it. It's a lot better put together than Beyonce's album anyway.

She spoke about the 20 year thing in a mag articule (Q maybe? Can't remember) - Control was her first album that she did independantly of her Dad which is why she starts her solo clock from there and not her actual first album.

VERY impressed - I've read a lot of negative comments online and was quite worried for this album. So impressed with it I've ordered the Japanese Deluxe edition for the DVD, book and bonus tracks.

How come everyone is slating Call On Me. I think the song is alright, obviously a bad choice for lead single but the track is all good. Not overly keen on the album though, thought Damita Jo was a lot better. The only stand out tracks for me so far are 'So Excited' and 'Daybreak'.

There isn't a track I dislike -Enjoy just HAS to be a single. So Excited should've been the first single...why they chose Call On Me is a mystery to me.
I too ADORE Damita Jo...in my top 3 Janet albums |

Her interludes are so boring, must she have so many. Although some of them on Damita Jo were geniuenly funny, even if there weren't meant to be...

There's only 5 on here - and they fit in with the album. Chatting to her friend Lynette, a singing interlude 'smooth it out' leading into the mid tempo/ballad section.

I like the interludes too! Pity they all werent a bit retrospective mind. I kinda wish the first one wasnt made to sound so "casual" with the way she starts and the stops to ask "are you recording". I would have preferred it to be just so.
