Cross-network MMSs
With all the networks currently being very generous and letting people send picture (MMS) messages for free until February, it seems strange to me that it's not possible to send these from one network to another.
Is there some technical reason for this, or is it just the networks being bloody-minded? Surely the networks realise that if 'MMSing' is to take off like 'SMSing' has, then people are going to want to send pictures to all their friends, regardless of which network they use... |

SMS when it first started was restricted to the same network.
The way these things work, it costs the network nothing to transmit a message over their own network, the only charge they face is for access to other networks. ie O2 will charge Vodaphone to transmit a message from a Voda customer to an O2 customer. Only reason they offer free MMS now is because well it doesn't cost the networks anything yet. Cross network MMS is due just after christmas (when all the deals end funnily enough), so they keep telling us at work, but then take whatever the networks say and add a good few weeks to get the real date. |

I appreciate that it'd cost the network more for me to send an MMS from my Vodafone to an orange phone than it would for me to sent one to another Vodafone.
What I don't understand is why they're not allowing it at the moment. These free offers are designed to get people interested and excited about MMS, but they seem to be shooting themselves in the foot by not allowing cross-network. After all, I'm sure it would be just as easy to say "picture messages free on the same network till February, XXp to other networks". |

According to an Orange customer service rep who i spoke too, and a T-Mobile one on the matter its because the other network has no way of knowing if the phone the MMS is being sent to is MMS Compatable. So they do not know if to send the goto this URL to view this MMS Message or actually send the full MMS.

From my experience cross network works, an orange rep has sent a message to my t-mobile phone.
The networks are probably just testing the water, trying to get the tarrifs right (t-mobile just completely changed theirs) and so on before launching it full scale. Keeping it exclusive also encourages people to get a Vodaphone MMS handset because their friend has a Vodaphone MMS handset. MMS is a brilliant way for the networks to get new customers as almost all the phones are out of the reach of most people unless they take out a new contract (the Sony Ericsson t300 being the only one realy viable as a pre pay product) So if a group of friends all want MMS they all go out get phones on the same network to let them do it, and before you ask it happens, we get a fair few peeps and peepette's choosing a new network purely to allow them to send MMS messages to their mates. |
