It's available on torrent. Has anyone who's a fan heard it? What do you think..? I cannot make my mind up. I like it more than I liked Playing The Angel in a shorter amount of time, but I cannot help think that the leaked version is a demo or not quite finished... Probably the danciest song DM have ever done, though...

I'm being cautious here as it took a few plays to warm to Precious, but it sounds like B-side material to me. The lyrics sound like they came from some Martin Gore lyric generator.
Like the music though. Looking forward to the Booka Shade and Trentemoller mixes.

****in' ell... only us two here... the lyrics themselves aren't THAT bad... as fans they are cliched, but as "best of" purchasers, they're leads into what Martin's lyrics really are about in past albums, and if only British radio played them, then the rest of the back catalogue would get some purchase.

Now the "clean" radio edit is out, I like the song a lot, and I can only hope it gives the boys their first number one... God knows when the next time will be.

I listened to a clip of it on the official site - Seems alright, but I think I need to hear the whole thing. And yes, it's about time they got a number 1. God knows they deserve it after all this time!!

And on a side-note - The new DVD is incredible, don't you think??

It's on a par with It's Called A Heart for me, another one of Martin's more poppier moments though lyrically Martyr sounds like Dave doing an impression of Martin!

Yes, we love it. A lot of fans on the official site absolutely hate it because of the video effects, but we're both fans and we thought it was great. Mind you, Mrs Nasalhair worships the ground Dave Gahan walks on.

Wanted to bump this up.

Purely because Depeche Mode are and have always been brilliant and this single is out this week.

I liked the first load of songs on the new album, up to Precious, but past that, it goes downhill really quickly. Still, better than the album before that (exciter?) that was awful, and made me think that maybe Dave should go back on the powder..

I thought 'Playing The Angel' was really poor and 'Martyr' is even worse. I think they should call it a day now.

as a life long 'modette' and having bought all their singles on every format from "Dreaming Of Me" way back in 1981 I can quite honestly say that "Martyr" is their worst effort to date in my opinion. My dear friends at Mute told me that "Martyr" was the first song written and recorded for the "Playing The Angel" album but was dropped as Dave & Fletch wern't to keen on it and it didn't fit in with the theme which seemed to be developing from the rest of Martin's songwriting at that time. At the end of the day it was just a 'bonus' unreleased track that was originally only going to be available on their new "Greatest Hits" album as an incentive for the fans and the record collectors like myself to have a reason to buy yet another "Best-Of" album. I feel the decision to actually release it as a single is a bad one as it isn't as strong as any of the last batch of singles and I can only see the loyalists buying it simply to hear the various remixes that have been produced by some of the top brass DJ's (The Paul Van Dyk radio version is actually much better than the Mode original radio version too imho) Just wish the band would of seen sense and not released this track as a single as it seems to be a sole attempt for the record company to cash-in on the DM brand

Hey, at least there are (yet more) new remixes of the back catalogue to enjoy if you don't like Martyr. That Daniel Miller's a shrewd businessman!

It's also available in places called shops, where you can pay for it and therefore support the band.

I quite like it and personally I think it should have gone on "Playing the Angel" which, as a DM fan since "Black Celebration", I feel is a rather weak album with the exception of "John the Revelator" and "Precious".

They're not remixes of the back catalogue, they're remasters where the original tapes are basically cleaned and polished, and also provided in formats like 5.1 surround. The remasters also have extensive sleeve notes (well worth a read if you are a fan), new photos, and if you buy the 2-disc versions which have a DVD, each has a superb documentary about the making of the album, all around 30 minutes in duration and well worth watching.

Wasn't a fan of Martyr on first listen but have really got in to it now and absolutely love it. Good to hear them do dancier, upbeat songs again. Heard it is only at 9 in the midweeks so sadly probably won't be in the top10 by Sunday.

Again, I will go against the grain and save I think, although not perfect, Playing the Angel was a real return to form for DM.

I was referring to this little lot actually which I'm looking forward to hearing when they're released on Monday.

Personal Jesus - Boyz Noize Rework
Never Let Me Down Again Digitalism Remix
Everything Counts Oliver Huntemann & Stephan Bodzin Dub
People Are People Underground Resistance Remix
Everything Counts Troy Pierce Unofficial Business Mix
Personal Jesus Hearthrob Rework 2
The Sinner In Me Ricardo Villalobos Conclave Remix
Personal Jesus Timo Maas Remix
Just Can't Get Enough Dirty South Mix

Funny how none of the stories currently circulating around the internet about the MTV Europe music awards seem to be picking out the fact that DM won best group.

Granny - don't get your hopes up to much on these remixes as most of them are utter s***e unfortunately Timos Maas did a good job on his take of "Personal Jesus" and only one of the new "Everything Counts" remixes impressed me. I guess the problem with most of the DM remixes these days is that practically none of the original song remains apart from the odd vocal sample. Makes me pine for the long gone days of the old 'extended remix' where the band themselves would produce their own take on their own song. Happy days indeed.

I've got all Depeche Mode singles, albums and DVD's to date... every one of them bought for with my own money, thank you. Was just alerting peole to the fact that they could hear a rough mix online in anticipation of buying the single when it was released.

That's fine, but it has been available as a high-quality sample on the DM website for quite some time too, and I objected to the implication that it could be downloaded via torrents which, after all, is illegal...

Getting back on track, however, i'm quite disappointed that there aren't more Martin vocals within the song. The original version I heard was very rough, and I thought there may have been additional vocals added.

I never understood what all the fuss was about with the effects added to the DVD... I think the DVD is absolutely brilliant and more than captures the atmosphere I felt at the 2 gigs I saw. I still say that having Goodnight Lovers is an inspired choice to finish the concert, though. Loved it.

Yep, we love the new DVD too. We'd been slightly disappointed by the "One Night In Paris" DVD which felt a little bit soulless, but the new one is great and really captures the whole DM concert experience for us. Sure, some of the effects ("Suffer Well") are a bit odd, but they're not too intrusive and at least make it a bit more interesting to watch than a traditional concert film.

ONIP seemed a little bit too (and this is the only word I can think of) clinical. Very clean and precise... the latest one is so good. The aerial view during Goodnight Lovers is amazing.

I haven't been able to purchase the remasters yet (and I won't be torrenting them either ) but i've heard the dvd's on each one are really good... have you seen them?!

Just caught the new advert for the Best Of and I am very disappointed that the only two songs to feature were Just Can't Get Enough and Enjoy the Silence!!

Yes, and they are excellent - about 30 minutes per documentary. Well worth watching.

What do you mean, "the only two songs to feature"? Please bear in mind that the new "Best Of" released tomorrow is volume 1 - there will be more.

The only two songs to feature on the advert were Just Can't Get Enough and Enjoy The Silence... it's a shame that these are the only two songs that most people identify the band with when they've released so many brilliant singles.

I heard that the band didn't want the release of the Best Of and that it's only called Volume 1 as a kind of in-joke from Martin due to the fact that there wouldn't be anymore.

Hear a longer advert tonight with several more songs on it...
