SKY bought the PAY rights for the show (CH4 only had free rights) which got them the UK first run rights much to CH4's annoyance and I think that was the case for 2 or 3 years until E4 launched (2001?) on the back of a PAY bundle of NBC programmes which included Friends, ER, West Wing and Third Watch all of which had been on SKY1 before.

The last time Sky One showed a new episode of Friends was the season 6 finale, E4 launched with the season 7 premiere.

Not sure how long Sky had had the Friends rights for, I know they showed season 4 before Channel 4, but don't know if they'd had them from the beginning.

Season 4 was the first series they showed.

I remember it started in the 1998-1999 season. I was at Uni and a girl I was house sharing with coughed up for cable just to watch it.

no.

channel 4 actually did premiere the show all those years ago.

I remember watching it for no other reason than i'd seen courtney cox in ace ventura and fancied her

10 years later and i've got the whole thing on DVD and still watch the repeats at 5pm on E4 most days
