I currently have a landliner with BT but was wondering if I need to keep this landline if I get Skype and stop paying a line rental? if so could I choose the same number I have at the moment with Skype?

Simply no. Skype only have certain numbers available to them. Also, if you stop paying line rental, I would have thought the internet would get cut off with it too.

Unless you're on cable that is...
I have stopped paying line rental, have cable internet and use SIP Internet phoning. Saved me £110 quid a year!

If you have ADSL, you can't cancel the landline.

Anyone wishing to use skype to replace a landline needs their head examined, IMO. (that said, anyone using skype needs their head examined)

Skype is also a rip off, they charge for an incomming number, plenty of proper grown up VoIP providers out there offering cheaper call rates (Skype are some of the highest) and an incoming number of any area for free.
