I went on to the Tesco website to find out about ordering groceries online and getting them delivered. The T&C's state that you must have a clubcard before you can order online. I wonder how long it will be before they have security guards at the door of their stores checking that you have a clubcard before you get in?
I'm not against loyalty cards if you want one,I am against being forced to take one whether I want to or not. |

I'm not sure it's technically "art deco" though? Looks to be a more classical style to me. The Tesco at Perivale (West London) is most definitely Art Deco, and is beautiful: http://www.artofthestate.co.uk/londo...photos_004.htm |

The new Tesco recently built in Glasgow at the site of the new Silverburn Shopping Centre is the largest Tesco store ever built. It is also the largest supermarket in Scotland.

Here comes the wierd bit: White beams are appearing all over the store so when I asked what they were for, the bloke said: "The extension is going to be a 2nd floor. How do the trolleys get up? Lifts wouldnt be very practical (need 10 or so) so what will they use?
Our local at Wath-upon-Dearne recently had the same thing done to it. They did most of it during the night so that it wasn't 24hours for a while but it's made a huge size difference and now they sell a huge range of computer gear and TV's etc.The one I'm waiting for is the much talked about but nothing confirmed Rotherham branch going on stilts. They wanted to build a larger store on a different site, but the council refused. So the proposal is that they build a new store on the current site and use the carpark as well. By putting it on stilts they can have the carpark underneath and the larger store on top. |

Im sure the reason behind the sudden increase in TFT supermarkets are all of a sudden appearing is because some new legislation is passing through in the next year or two that says something like that a supermarket must have 1 parking sp ace per Xm2 (dont know the actual figures) selling space.
So, they are getting nearly twice as much retail space without losing any land to car parks. |

In the St Stephen's shopping centre in Hull, there is a Tesco Extra store, which has an underground car park system and inside the store itself, there is a mezzanine level with one of those conveyor belt type esculators mentioned earlier on in this thread.
I didn't like the conveyor belt esculator though, it scared the hell out of me due to the fact that it stopped suddenly as I was halfway up, and I was scared that I would topple backwards and fall back down to the bottom!

I wonder how many Tesco branches have opened in the last 7 years since this thread started? Each one probably bigger than the last...

More the going down than up. More scared of walking on the upper level in fear of it collapsing than the escalator though ![]() Plus those escalators don't half charge up the trolleys and end up giving you an static electric shock. (Though to be honest all those glass walk ways upstairs in St Stephens are the scariest thing in there. I can't walk over them ![]() )

Tesco in King's Lynn (when it was in the town High Street) had an upstairs for non-food items in the 1980s. There was a normal escalator up and stairs down, and a freight lift.
When WHSmith vacated the neighbouring property Tesco expanded there with the bakery section. Tesco moved out-of-town in the 1990s and Wilkinson moved into the store. Wilkinson then took on the former new Woolworths and a sports shop now has the store with the original escalator and stairs. Sainsbury in the town has an adjacent multi story car park and has always (since the 1980s) had trolley travelators up and down to the upper car park. A new out-of-town Sainsbury recently opened....How long until they deem the town centre one unnecessary? |

My Tesco put its old restaurant onto a new level. Not an entire new floor just a raised section at the back. A semi floor?

Tip: When you re-register, don't revive seven year old threads with your first post. Especially if those threads are about your weird obsession with department stores or large shops. It kinda makes it pretty obvious. |
