Recommend a HDMI dvd player for me
Hi guys I posted yesterday about the new Denon 1730 but have had no replies, probably because it's brand new so I though I would throw this question out there :
Can anyone recommend me DVD player that uses HDMI but not Faroudja DCDi ? I have an Oppo 971H and whilst it's PQ is excellent, my display ( Pioneer 436xde ) doesn't like the DCDi very much at all resulting in macroblocking so I am looking for a quality player without the Faroudja chip. Any recommendations ?

I have a Samsung DVD-HD 950 player, does all that is asked from but I mainly bought it for the audio, DVD audio and SACD functions. The player will upscale for all video resolutions, picture quality not bad and sound very good. HMDI connection, component and the usual connections. About £100 from Richer Sounds, has both optical and coaxial connections for digital plus the 6 analogue connections for audio discs. Give it a try if you're not happy with the Denon, it costs more in store and so mention that you saw the price on their website, £99.95, that's the last time I looked.

I guess the Denon DVD-A1XVA is out of the question?
I have to admit to have been out of the AV scene for a while (bought a dSLR camera that has been taken up all my money recently) so would suggest getting recommendations on www.avforums.com as many of the guys there really know their stuff (several members work in the industry) but as a dedicated follower of Denon for AV equipment I cant imagine that the DVD player you mention is going to be bad. It is worth noting that whilst you may get macroblocking with one implimentation of the faroudja chipset this doesnt automatically mean you will get it with another brand that uses it. If you go to a decent store (like SevenOakes) they should be able to set up a test for you if they have the 436xde in the store - alternatively if you go to a very good independant local store they will probably allow you to do a home test on your own screen |

Thanks Astaroth
I do think though that I need to stay away from Faroudja based players, I have a chequered history with them. A while back I bought a Denon player to use with my JVC ProgScan CRT and that cause severe macroblocking so I took it back and got a refund and now my Oppo is causing it too, it's frustrating as my previous plasma (Hitachi 42PD5200H) did not show the macroblocking error at all but my new 436xde does. I am tempted to try the 1930 as it looks excellent but again it uses the Faroudja FLi chip for deinterlacing, although the details I have seen list this against the component video outputs and not the HDMI but I expect it serves both, I really don't want to buy a 1930 and have to return it as I am unsure whether macroblocking would class as a returnable issue |
