HDMI v Component
Advice Please..
I have a LG Plasma HDTV [42PX3RVB] to which I have connected a LG DVD Player [DV8600]. The connection is via a component lead. Apart from any POSSIBLE benefits re upscaling, would I get a better picture with a HDMI connection, which means another DVD player, not a problem if the results are worth it.. Cheers....

Well, this is not an easy one. I dont have the option myself - but I have seen a few reviews now where the equipment was tested with both types of cable hookup. Its tempting to say that HDMI [digital] is bound to be better than [analogue] component. But it turns out that this is not always the case.

On a theoretical level it should be better....
DVD is recorded in a digital format TV processes & displays in a digital format Why convert the signal to analogue to simply pass it between the two and convert it back to digital? Each time you change something you risk errors and so you have 2 conversions that dont actually add any benefit but risk the mistakes Back to reality however, DACs and ADCs are very good and dont introduce many errors. A company can spend a lot of money putting in very good analogue routes (probably from older technology) and then put in a cheapo digital route simply to be able to claim it has a HDMI socket and charge the extra 10%. So, HDMI SHOULD be better than component but there are exceptions |
