SMS on BT phones - advice required
BT are selling phones that are SMS capable (e.g. http://www.shop.bt.com/invt/cay328?h...DRL5gjJw%3D%3D)
Does anyone have this or a similar system on a BT line as I'd like to understand how it works in practice......? When the text message is received, does the phone ring as normal and when answered you get the automated voice reading the message out, or does it just 'bleep' and store the message like a mobile phone would? If you have a non-SMS enabled phone on the same line (using extension sockets), will this cause a problem for the SMS service? thanks for any help! |

Because the Caller Display info (on BT lines, 2 areas of Telewest and one or two areas of NTL) is sent before the ringing, the phone (once set up) knows that the incomming is not a call but a message, so it doesn't ring the phone, but stores the text message and then bleeps or depending on phone plays a tune to alert you of an SMS.
On most cable lines because Caller Display info is sent after the first ring, the phone would ring once, then realise it's an SMS, store the SMS and then alert you. |

With a SMS phone, once set up, you don't listen to the messages, they are sent to the phone and displayed like a mobile.
If you use the SMS service in voice mode, then you dial 0845 602 1111 to listen to the messages again, except if the sender is on T-Mobile or their Virtuals (easyMobile, Virgin, Fresh etc) then it's another number (forget at the moment). |

Only have 1 SMS Phone in the house, and the other 2 are DECT without SMS. None of the other phones ring, only the SMS Phone bleeps when a message comes through.

If you have an independant Caller Display unit (such as the CD1000), you will actually see the call come in from 0800 587 5290, but as said none of the SMS or conventional phones ring.
I have a pair of BT Equinox 1200's and can collect the SMS on either/both phones. |

I bought the BT Synergy 4500s in the end - and SMS works a treat.
it just gives a bleep sound when a message is received, and the senders number is listed against it rather than an 0845/0800 number. Getting to read the SMS is a different matter though - you need to go through the menu system, which takes quite a few key presses. |

I've got a BT Diverse 6450 and have caller display etc.
Collecting and sending SMS messages is a doddle - really easy. I even use that phone as an alarm clock too! I'm really happy with that telephone ... you can even set different ringtones and pictures dependant on who is calling - I've got my address book in there now too (and it can take info from your existing mobile SIM card and read it too) Last edited by tomorrow : 26-10-2006 at 10:49. |

Text messages (SMS) on land-line telephones

How do I pick up messages with BT Text? How do I send, receive and pick up messages using BT Text? How do I collect a saved sms message on landline - Virgin Media land-line customers BT Text - Home SMS Service If you have an SMS text compatible caller id. land-line telephone, the messages are delivered to the handset as they would be on a mobile telephone. If not, you receive a call indicating that you have a new message and offering similar options to the 1571 messaging service. Note, however, that the voice interpretations of text messages are only stored for one day rather than the typical 30 days with 1571 and other voice-mail services. |
