Look out for 075 numbers comming to mobile phones near you!

Ofcom have announced they will be opening up the 075 range for new mobile phone numbers and also to designate the ranges 071 - 074 for mobile services. 071-074 won't be available for allocation (to communications providers) yet though.

In the 075 range this will add a further possible 100 million mobile numbers to the 300 million which are already possible. Ofcoms statement (link below) states that only 30% of mobile allocated mobile numbers are being used (so thats just under 100m numbers) so it seems a little strange that they are allowing a further 100m numbers into the market.

Ofcoms Statement

This leaves the UK 07 numbering plan looking like this:

070 - Personal numbers (possibly to move to 065 next year)
071 - 074 Future Mobile Numbers
075 - New Mobile Numbers
076 - Radio Pagers (And mobile phones on the Isle Of Man)
077 - 079 Existing mobile numbers

There will be no change to existing numbers.

Any comments

ps I know this is sad!

Any idea when these new 075 numbers will be launched? I guess it would be cool to have one of the new numbers lol.

I wonder if the networks will all be fighting over who gets 07500 lol.

From reading the Ofcom document it looks like they are available for allocation to communications providers now, but obvisously it will be a little while before networks begin allocating these numbers to new customers.

If you keep an eye on this page, you'll see when they start being used.
