Sony RDR-HX510 dvd recording help

When we record onto re-recordable DVD's, sometimes it will start recording later than the timer set i.e 30 mins, 45 mins or 1 hour later than in the timer? This problem does not happen when recording onto the hard drive?

Any ideas please?

Many thanks.

sorry..but do you think it may be the weather? Somebody else said that their sky box goes off when bad weather/raining. Could just be bad luck when using a DVD?

it's not something I've ever seen on my 510 but then again I mostly record to HDD and transfer over. I do it this way because I found it very easy to damage RW disks and you don't realise until a recording fails.

I doubt it's the weather unless the signal is poor and you time signal is wrong (unlikely) but you would see that on the clock.

I've never seen this with any of my Sony HDD/DVDRs but it's usually favourite to check the clock setting and if the signal is weak on analogue the set it to manual.

Are you using the PDC/VPS feature.
I don't use it as I have noticed now and again my 510 doesn't start recording even though the program has started. (This is to HDD but sure it would have been the same to dvd).
When I have noticed it I quickly press the record button a couple of times and do it that way. I have never left it to see if it starts a certain number of minutes later. However I have come in and then noticed no recording has taken place.
So I have stopped using PDC/VPS.
I think my problem is that I have a low analogue signal (Or interference from High Pressure weather conditions). And the PDC program Delivery Control which is a start signal coming from the Teletex Signal gets interferred with. It could be that the signal conditions could improve in say 45 mins later and then the start signal would get thru....
The test for you is Does it ONLY happen on the timer recording to DVD and never on the HDD when recording terrestial stations. If that really is the case then may I recommend a Liteon 5045..... NOOOOO not really

I don't think PDC is a usable feature if you are recording into line 3 from say a Sky satellite. So I don't think any of this is relevant if you are experiencing the problem from this sort of recording.

Good Luck with sorting your unusual problem.

I have never used PDC on my 510 ( I learnt not to trust it on an old VCR) and as far as I know my machine has never missed a recording.

I have only ever recorded to my HDD (and then transfered to +R for archiving) I don't know if that makes a difference.

Hi again, thank you for all your replies, sorry for the long delay in replying.

We have been experimenting over the past few weeks and noting when it happens, as ot does not happen all the time.

Sometimes when we record a programme onto a DVD, it will not start recording at the beginning of the programme, even though the start time has been programmed in correctly. Instead it will start recording, say 20 minutes or 40 minutes later than when it is supposed to. Recording onto the hard drive is not affected. We have tried it during different weather conditions, but that does not seem to affect it.

Still at a loss really

Other than backing the machine I can only suggest recording everything to HDD and dubbing onto DVD what you want.

Sorry, what do you mean by "backing the machine"?

Hi all,

Still experiencing this problem. We do not use the PDC/VPS feature so it's not that. The clock I am not sure about. The clock is digital, what do you mean change to analogue

Think will take back to Currys. Had it now for 8 months. Do you think they will the gives us a new one or send away for repair? Or does this model exist anymore?

Thanks all.

I was referring to the analogue TV signal as opposed to freeview. If the signal is weak and the clock is set to update automatically it can be set to the wrong time or even day.

They will probably try to fob you off with a repair as it's now been superceded but you could argue that it was not of merchantable quality to start with and demand a refund.

Took it back to Curry's yesterday. They said it was "a grade 2", so was nolonger able to be repaired. Said we would go a choose another one. So walked out with a brand new Pioneer DVR-4400HX and £50 credit note.

A result I would say.
