Connecting Toppy to PC without a cable.

My PC and Topfield are in the same room, but at different corners, and I was wondering if there was a wireless device that acts just like a USB cable so that I don't need to have a lead travelling across the lounge floor.

I remember that Argos used to sell something like this to connect between the USB sockets of the PC and printer. You could send things to print at the opposite end of the room without wires and both the PC and printer acted as if they were connected by a normal USB cable.

Any ideas where to get one from, or even what I should search for, as any searches for "wireless" comes up with wireless internet results?

Try looking in the Computer Connections section of the forums on www.toppy.org.uk there's lots of information about how to connect your Toppy to a PC wirelessly.

Thanks for that. After reading a few threads I remembered that the adaptor I was looking for was a bluetooth printer adaptor.

I've had a look at getting a dongle for the PC and a USB printer adaptor, but do you think it would work? It looks a cheaper option than the new stuff on the market, but I don't want to get it until I'm sure that it would work.

It won't work. The only ways of making it work are the Asus/Slug options or something very similar.

Most wireless USB devices are not device independent; they are based around particular functions like printing.

I was hoping that you wouldn't say that. Oh well, I'll have to look into the Asus and Slug options.

Thanks anyway.

If your toppys in the saem room as your P.C it should be easy to link it via USB.
my P.C is in another room to my Toppy, and thats hapily linked up via USB.

They are in the same room, but at opposite corners. I'd need at least a 20 metre cable, and that's just the diagonal distance, so I'd also have to take into account the extra length needed to go around the walls and doors. I think I'll be opting for the Asus or Slug, as it looks like the tidier (and possibly easier) option.

I think people have managed about 17m USB connection if I remember correctly.
Edit using active and passive USB cables linked together.

You have a room that is over sixty feet long; thats a baronial hall not a room; do you live in a castle?

No, I wish I did! I meant 20 feet not 20 metres. It is a big room, but it is because it takes up the whole ground floor - minus the kitchen.

Actually there is new Wireless USB coming from Belkin, but don't know when.

The other alternative is a usb extender. I found one recently on www.videk.co.uk. It allows you to utilise CAT-5 cabling up to 150ft.

http://www.videkonline.co.uk/home.as...=5&chapterID=1

but is £50 to buy, plus the cost of the CAT-5 cable. Might be useful for some though.

Videk is good for cables/connectors, this page has a whole listing of possible USB extender options. I use them a lot for my work.

I looked at that option, but in the end felt that the Asus was the better bet, plus I could connect my Dreambox, Sonos, NMP to it and get rid of the wiring and the hub in the loft.

I have yet to clash swords with young Oleg though. oer:

This Belkin Wireless USB, do you have any more details. Looks interesting and I wouldn't mind keeping an eye for when that comes out.

The Belkin Wireless USB is being developed in the US and is not yet available.

only link I could find:

Seeing as you have an I-player, like me, this would be useful.

Cannot wait to get my Topfield, but it's still in the Missus' hands
