Arctic Monkeys - silly name, great band. But if you think about it, some of the greatest bands in history had silly names but as you are so familiar with it, it doesn't sound strange at all...

For weird group names, you'd have to go a long way to beat the 60s and 70s....

....the list is endless ![]() It sounds as though it would be more like a punk band, but when watching a retrospective of John Peel's life, they played a clip of him from his Texas radio station from about 1964. (He was called John Ravenscroft at this point). In the clip he told listeners to tune to his show to hear the latest in 'magnificent English beat groups, such as Hollies, Kinks, Spencer Davies Group, Snotty and the Nose Pickers and Boys Blue'. Searching the web came up with no reference to any band called Snotty and the Nosepickers, and I got the idea that Peel was having his own private joke at gullible Americans' expense: the idea that he could have dozens of Texans going 'yeah, I just love Snotty and the Nose Pickers' in a desperate attempt to sound cool.
