Anyone ever had promise rings?
If you've no idea what I'm on about, see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promise_ring
Has anyone here ever had one, or any experiences of them? It seems a really novel idea to me and something that came up just from a quick Google after chatting to my girlfriend tonight about Christmas presents for each other. We're not in a position to get engaged yet, really, so this seems like the perfect solution. Anyone have any suggestions on what could be suitable - any UK retailers that specifically have a range of promise rings?

Why not just get engaged? Not like you have to be married within a certain time frame.

Because I want my girlfriend's parents full permission for their daughter's hand in marriage, and I don't believe I've proved my love for her enough yet. She knows I love her and I know she loves me, but we've only been seeing each other three months.
It was just another idea.

If you are a ring manufacturer then they are a great way of increasing profit
What about first date rings, and anniversary platinum pendants? |

OOOH I've never seen this before. Looks like a great idea to me. It takes the pressure off of proposing and marraige but at the same time shows you are commited....
Excellent idea IMO. Wouldn't mind one myself lol

(It'll be six months since we got together on Christmas Eve, hence why we want them as Christmas presents.) Last edited by Mr Pringle : 02-10-2006 at 22:09. |

I haven't heard of a promise ring but I do know a young couple that didn't want to get engaged just yet but wanted to let other people they were serious and they bought themselves "commitment" rings. I do believe they bought them at argos. Hope this helps.

i'm not sure about promise rings, but I have got two eternity rings. My first one was off my pevious boyfriend, he gave it to me after 4 months for christmas, I wouldn't have been happy with being proposed to, as although I was madly in love with him I was too young and not ready for all that comes with getting married. This ring has been a great source of comfort to me since, because he promised to love me forever. So when he died on the 10 January I had some comfort in the knowledge of his feelings for me.
Then when I met my present boyfriend who i'v been with for six years now, He also bought me one for christmas, and it matches the other one. Now I have an engagement ring I wear the two eternity rings together on the same finger, but on my right hand. It makes me feel very special and lucky to have been promised to be loved for ever by the two of them. Although I can appreciate this might seem weird to some people. All in all, i would say go for it, I'm sure she will appreciate the gesture and she will know how you feel about her. |

So these rings are "I promise not to snog anyone else" rings
Got to admit if I needed a ring to do that I'd worry about the relationship. If you want to buy eachother a ring, buy a ring. But what one earth does a promise ring actually indicate

Are these the same as friendship rings? That is a ring you get when you are serious about being boyfriend and girlfriend but not ready for the engagement side of things yet. Its usually a teenage type of thing, I haven't really heard of them much nowadays.

They sound very American - the sort of thing you'd see in a teen soap opera or something. I think if you want to buy someone a ring you should just buy it - you don't need to dress it up with any other excuse.

Her mum, and especially her dad, think the world of her and I'd like to ask him as a gesture when the time comes properly. I want him to be safe in the knowledge that I will always love his daughter and I'll take care of her no matter what. That may seem very old-fashioned, but I think it's only courtesy. Quote:

i think they sound lovely take no notice of the cynics, and asking for her hand in marriage when the time comes maybe "old fashioned" but a lovely thing to do and most parents would respect you for this ,both my daughters are married and both fiances asked us for permission ,eternity rings are usually given after the birth of the first child and match the stones of the engagment ring, whatever you decide to buy i'm sure she will be delighted, and all the best for the future may you have a long and happy life together,we decided to get engaged on our second date when i was sixteen married at seventeen and thirty two years later are still blissfully happy

Awwww!
![]() Yes, that's exactly what I thought when it came to eternity rings. It's more than just a friendship ring for whatever, it's a promise ring, and we both thought it'd fit the occasion perfectly. It's just choosing the right one/s for it! My girlfriend will be really delighted when she sees your post - I really hope that in 32 years we'll be as happy as you are.

If it's something you want to do, I don't think it matters what anyone else thinks. It's not like you have to tell other people what they mean to you anyway.
On a side note, I thought an eternity ring was the one the hubby is supposed to buy his darling wife when she has their first child. I think it's very different from the 'promise ring' idea. The eternity ring is traditionally the one up from the wedding ring. |

"Promise Rings"? Are they what you get when you've been sitting on the bog too long?
