I would like to add my 10pence in for what its worth becasue I feel very strongly about some of the wild statements that are being made, particularly the one above.

Setting the scene, I am a Sony fan and have been for years and years, infact most electrical products I have are Sony, mobile phone, radio, MP3 player, TV, HD recorder.... etc etc.

My TV is not performing correctly due to an incompatibility in the software. I am told there will be an update broadcast, I like many others have been waiting about a year for Sony to fix this issue (see link below). I have spoken to Managers, Directors and any big cheeses short of the CEO at Sony to get this resolved and still it is not. The stock response is were working on it.

So not wanting to put my point too aggressively please do not have or give the impression that shouting at Sony will bring any joy if you have an issue. And this really I think is the true reason why some people including myself are deeply disappointed in the brand which in my opinion has been declining over the years. You have to ask yourself, why am I buying Sony, nice design, higher price, reduced functionality, poor aftercare... it doesn't stack up.

Like middlep1 says, You've got to remember the people who moan about these models are a small percentage of the models sold.
I have a 710 and have had it since it was launched over a year ago, I find it a brilliant recorder/Player and have never had a problem with it.
Just remember how many models are sold Thousands and how many complaints Hundreds. There is always gonna be a small percentage of good that are faulty.
It's only me

i accept what you say ,thats fair enough, but i don't accept the fact $ony lie about the issue and deniey of hearing of such problems when we've phoned them knowing others also have phoned them on the same day

Here's the picture I emailed the retailer.

Notice 'HDD' in bottom left corner. This was when trying to playback something.

Why should I have to format the drive on a six day old machine.”

Yeah I also get the "Dirty Disk" error. Only about once a month... I find the playback starts to stutter before it freezes with this message Im guessing the data throughput in HQ is more and therefore more sensortive. The only way I can see of getting the recorder working again is unplugging and replugging the mains. My therory is the recorder uses the same bit of software to read from the hard disk as it does from a DVD. Hense you dont have things like Programe information on recordings etc. Also Im guessing the software sences a dirty signal from the the media (DVD or HDD) and therefore generates the error. Made me wonder how a HDD can be dirty, I thought HDDs were sealed units

Anyhow there ware software updates being broardcast for the next couple of days so going home tonight and putting my recorder onto channel 71 (I understand) and waiting for the update to happen and hoping the dirty disk problem and a couple of rebootings have been fixed.

It's moved over to MUX 1, so you'll have to tune in to BBC1.
